Showing off in public is a way of getting attention from you. Kindly stop what you are doing take the child back to the car and go home. Then give them the attention they need time out, takes toys away, and explain to them what they did wrong.

Yes. My reaction was to act just like they acted. If they are loud and obnoxious I get loud and obnoxious. If they want to kick and scream and yell and throw themselves into a an all out temper tantrum....well guess what mom is right there with them.
Kids like to embarrass their parents and put them on the spot. My kids know that mom gives as good as she gets. We don't have outbursts anymore.
I am not afraid to embarrass my kids in public and they know that now.

Don't have kids, but my older brother (35) shows off all the time when we are shopping. It's really embarrassing, he'll run up to me with a fake voice and screech "oh my gooood, I simply have to have this" then he'll throw whatever it is in my cart and run away. Or he will be in a different isle and he'll scream "incoming" and throw something over the top of the isle and try to land it in my cart. I usually wind up leaving the store with my head down and my face beat red from embarrassment. And of course with my brother doing a weird dance step sort of run behind me screaming "wait up"

I just let them because they crash and burn and get embarrassed. Then I get to say, "Now are you going to listen?".
