Someone in my family was just told she has to be seen by a neurosurgeon as soon as possible, but nonetheless every specialist is usually already heavily booked and cannot give an appointment any sooner than a month from the current date. I need to know if there is any way of convincing the specialist´s receptionist, or the specialist him or herself, that the case is urgent and should be looked into with the utmost urgency. Thanks.

Thanks for the recommendation to add the location of the patient in question. She is currently living in a suburb in northwest Chicago. They have not even referred her to any specialist, because she doesn't have any insurance and the clinic she used to go to has basically just told her they can't do much for her. She therefore has to try to get some attention at the county's hospital, but being it a hospital that offers gratuitous care, the waiting list can rise even higher, and we are looking into wether she should at least get looked at by a specialist outside the hospital to asses how urgent her situation is. Thank you everyone!

At any of the doctor's offices you called, you can ask to be put on a stand-by list in case they have cancellations...

Neurosurgeons are busy people and there are vanishingly few of them, as litiginous bastardry has forced them out of the business.

She needs to go to her regular doctor and have them give her a referal... this is probably needed for insurance anyways and may speed up the process, if anything have the office called the specialist

Speak with the Chief of Neurology at several hospitals.

Usually in urgent situations your doctor himself will call and make an appointment for you.
