In computing, phishing is a form of criminal activity using social engineering techniques. Phishers attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy person or business in an electronic communication. Phishing is typically carried out using email or an instant message, although phone contact has been used as well[1]). Attempts to deal with the growing number of reported phishing incidents include legislation, user training, and technical measures.

It's when a spammer sends a fraudulent e-mail claiming to be from a real company (such as PayPal or eBay), and tries to entice the recepient into "logging in" through a fake site. By doing this, the spammer can harvest the recipient's user name and password, allowing access to that person's actual account.

It's when people send you an email pretending to be some other company. So say you get an email from a "bank" that asks you to click on a (fake) link and enter your email address and password. If you do it, they will then save that information, go into your account on the real website, and use your login information to get access to your bank accounts.
