You will know how much you love someone by how willing you are to tell them the truth.

The problem with lies, is that the more you tell the bigger they get. Eventually, they catch up with you because you can't remember what or if you lied about. People's feelings belong to them. They should take ownership of them, not you. You should never lie to protect someone's feelings. Eventually, the truth will come out and it will look bad on the lie teller for not being truthful in the first place.

Well Exodus 20 tells us not to bare false witness which is basically lying. If you read though in the Bible you will see where the harlot in Jericho lied to the authorities about the spies from Israel to protect their lives and she ended up being the only person to survive the destruction of Jericho. I think lying is wrong and it is a sin and if we start to justify it then we will soon be lying about everything. It is better to err on the part of God than of man.

Good or bad, right or wrong, is all subject to interpretation. Looking at it from a biblical stanpoint, even God and Jesus condoned lying. In John 20:17 it says, "Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and [to] my God, and your God." Here he told Mary Magdelene to lie.

Abraham lied to the pharaoh telling him that his wife was his sister (Gen 12:13). The pharoah thinking this to be true took his Sarah as his wife. God punished pharaoh for that which he knew not (Gen 12:17). When is a lie acceptable and when it is not? The question is what is the intent of the lie. If you lie to protect yourself as Abraham did then it must be acceptable.

In Islam, according to the Islamic doctrine of Taqiya, you may lie to any non-muslim and under certain circumstance, a muslim. Wikipedia has a nice article on Islamic lying doctrine.

Always wrong to lie. And are you really protecting someone's feeling or just delaying it?

I've had the longest argument over this. I personally will lie if it helps me not to hurt others' feelings. I would be willing to take responsibility for my choice. Even if it is considered wrong. Also you should consider the situation. In important, critical matters you should be truthful. Like don't tell your friend he/she has gotten "Fatter." But do tell her/him that her/his wife/husband is cheating on him/her!
Hope that helped!

that's not lying that's being considerate. if it's hurtful then sometimes it's best not to say anything or just say something nice. if that's what you're doing then there's nothing wrong with it.
