I agree. Dark red is a great choice. Another option, which would be equally good is light gray. There are a HUGE number of black and gray accessories available for a bedroom. Gray and black are a lot like greens. If you stay within the same color wave, it's almost impossible to make a mistake. Gray on gray works about the same as green on green.
Additionally, if you stay within the gray/black monochromatic scheme, the details will disappear into the color scheme. That means that when you add just a few bright colors the eye will be drawn to them automatically. That means that a simple flower arrangement (say in a dark red) will really pop.

If you like dark colors, then you shouldn't paint it too light.
Red or purple will make your room look elegant, contrast with your antique furniture. The room wont be too dark, and not "boring".
And you also add some printed border on the top of the wall with 1 level darker/lighter color from your wall.
If your wall is red, the use 1 level darker border, or 1 lever lighter border (but not pink!!).
You also can make "stamps" for border using a sponge or a big leaf.
With the sponge you can shape flowers, juz put the sponge in the other color, not too much, the you can start to stamp the wall.
For the leaf, paint the leaf with the other color (with brush), the stamp it on the wall.
If I were you, I'd paint the room red with black borders of leaves.
Have fun ^o^

since I haven't seen your space, and don't know your tastes I can't suggest a color BUT
If your space is small, a dark color will make it seem smaller. If you must have a dark color, try painting 3 walls a lighter hue and one wall the killer color.
For black furniture, sage or beige are nice muted choices that will allow you to decorate in many ways. I don't recommend anything too bright if the room is large. Don't feel bound to one color either, some of the best homes have 2 or more paint colors in the same room.
I am including a link that will probably help you. It is Martha Stewart's Home Decorating Planner
http://www.marthastewart.com/images/pdf/home_decorating_planner.pdf
When I bought my house I got free catalogs from ethan allen and pottery barn (you can choose stores you like). I got my inspiration from them, since they are my style. (HINT) If you find a designer color that you like, you can take the paintchip to any Wal-Mart and they will make you an exact copy with the brand of your choice. (go Dutchboy for easy walls, Kilz for walls with stains)
Also, be careful when choosing to paint your walls dark red. It is easy to misjudge and end up with a burgundy or purple color.

Since your furniture is dark, the walls can go dark too, but you have to be careful that your accessories don't clash... rugs, curtains... Sometimes, too much dark washes a room out....
I think a pretty beige, rich creme or a goldy brown of a lighter hue, would be nice with like sheer black scarves across the top of your windows, they can be kinda pricey, but they look classy & warm. Then your rugs can have the black with the golden colors going through, comforter or spread can also be black, then you can coordinate with colored throw pillows incorporating the golden tones from the rugs...or acsessories, pic frames, wall hangings or mirrors, etc..
Hope this helps!

I would suggest you choose your bedding first and then pull a color from that. Dont limit yourself on the color, think more about the style of the furniture then go from there.

I painted our like a maroon (Vesuvian Garnet is the actual color) and a beige/cream color kind of deeper like Honey. I also have black furniture and dark brown curtains and comforter. That's just what I did, and I like it!

Bedrooms, more than ever private retreats…are ideal places to calm down or spruce up with special paint finishes. Yellows are warm, bright colors, ideal for dark spaces to make us feel cozy.

i think apple green, and, or, sunny yellow as an accent color would be beautiful with the antique black look of the bedroom suit.
