i think its becuase of the strong chemicals in the hair coloring

it isn't harmful, thats a myth. The problem is (and maybe this is what you are asking about) is that something happens to your hair and it doesn't take the color. I know this through experience of having a bad hair dye job just before i got pregnant, which i could'nt dye out once i got pregnant. I don't know how it works.

My guess is because there are tons of harmful chemicals in hair dyes, some of which can affect and hurt the baby. It might be more of a safety precaution, but I think it is one that should be listened to.

They told my sister it was the fumes and such .... told her to wait until 2nd trimester. They told her the better option was to get highlights since it didn't touch the scalp instead of all over color ... (which didn't take while she was pregnant anyway)

The chemicals in it are absorbed thru your scalp, into your bloodstream, and then to the baby, causing birth defects.
