A lot of times when people try to hit a high not they unconsciously tip their chin up, because somehow we think if we hold our head a little higher, it will help to reach the note. Unfortunately, tilting the chin up like that cuts off your airway and tightens the vocal chords. Another problem is that people try to get the power for the high note by breathing from the chest when they need to breathe from the diaphragm. I've seen many people do this. In order to hit high notes, the vocal chords and breathing must all be relaxed, but when you are afraid of a high note not coming out right, you tense up and that tension will be heard in the voice. Doing vocal and breathing exercises helps your breathing to be more relaxed. If you run, bike, swim or do other vigorous sports, this also helps to develop your lungs and makes it easier to hit high notes.

If you put your hand on your throat and sing a low note...you will feel that you use less muscle than your higher notes which require you to narrow the throat. Notice wind instruments with narrow opening like a flute as opposed to say the obo which is deep and has a larger opening.

Short vocal chords. You can lengthen your vocal chords by vocal exercises like scales. However, like everything else, there is a limit to how high you can go -- all of the factors include age, hormones, weight, smoking and gender. However as we age our voices begin to "bottom out".
