I think your husband is right- toilet covers are on the out! I haven't seen one in my house or anyone else I know for about ten years.
I've seen suggestions for contact paper instead of toilet paper covers- but I really think you're pushing any kind of lid cover. I think the best to do is leave it bare!
For clever bathroom decorating ideas, I really suggest Southern Living: http://www.southernliving.com/southern/homes/ideas/slideshow/0,14243,473963,00.html
It's a really fun slideshow with some awesome ideas for your bathroom- no matter the size!

I haven't seen a toilet cover used in about 20 years. But, area rugs in front of the toilet and sink are still in and make a bathroom look cozy.

OUT! The best thing to do would be to buy a nice, solid colored ceramic (or whatever they're made of) lid the same color as your toilet so you don't have to stare at an ugly plastic lid.
Paint the room a solid color such as a colonial blue or nice spring green and then put in white and stainless steel fixtures (check out www.homedepot.com) and mosaic tile. Simple, classic, and elegant. Then you can decorate with white crown molding shelves (they even have them at Target) and choose a few small items (apothecary jars, candles...) to place on them. Less is more when it comes to bathrooms.

Yuck! Aren't toilet covers dirty? It's best to keep things clean and shiny. What colors are the tile and fixtures now. You could get a wallpaper border or do a stencil to coordinate with them. From these colors get a scented candle, maybe a silk flower. Hang a picture over the towel bar with the frame painted to match the towel bar. Light colored towels are best as they could be washed in hot water to kill germs, but stay nicer looking than white ones. Pinks or peach are pleasant bathroom colors.

Your husband is right about the cover besides they should never have been in. However the rugs are at lest still fictional depending on who the males r in your house you may want to keep that. PS that picture might have been appropriate for another site. Believe me there is an on-line community for it.

The lid covers are NOT out! The stores are filled with them, so someones buying them! But, as far as the whole deal like the tank cover, yes!
I just recently gave both of my bathrooms a face lift. With one, I went with sage greens, since its off my bedroom, (sage chenille spread with sheer sage curtains)I incorporated the 2 rooms to coordinate. Solid sage shower & window curtains, lid cover with matching contour rug, as well as an oblong rug in front of the vanity. My towels are creme with tiny sage rose floral design, and then mauve colored rose trim along the edges to give an accent color.... solid sage and solid mauve hand towels, I also used a sage hand towel on top of the toilet tank, and then I put diff colored sages and mauves little soaps in a pretty glass dish on top of tank... On the wall above the toilet, I found a round mirror with a frame that had deep decorative cut outs, so I went to Walmart and found a couple coordinating colors, and painted it! Everyone loves it when they come to visit!
My other bathroom, is the main bathroom that everyone who comes to visit, uses the most, so I went a bit over board, but it looks really nice! I went with shades of blues, the shower curtain is sorta tie dye, but it goes in rows of blue colors, (the formal name for the main shade is "slate blue") and then theres a shelf above the toilet on the wall, with matching mosaic candle holders with a little greenery...... On top of the toilet tank, I have a little mosaic vase, with silver butterflies hanging from little chains, around the neck of it with greenery also, along with a oblong basket for combs and brushes! The vanity area is huge, with allot of mirror, so there are these little butterfly silouettes at the upper corner, that matches the decals on the bottom of the tub! I got all my rugs, towels and LIDS, at either Macys or Sears!
Theres a couple of ideas.... I think bathrooms are the easiest rooms in a home to change.. Next room is the kitchen, ughhh!

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/Kdbkf
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

I took menus from my favorite restaurants through out the country
and matted and framed them and covered my bathroom wall with them. Painted the room bright yellow and used different color matting and it looks pretty good.
And I'm a straight male living alone!
Forget the tank cover. Maybe use brick patterned contact paper ; )
