You talk about everyday news or just chit chat. Don't bring any of your life in a conversation with them. Talk to them as if friends not as part of your family. In laws have a habit of being one sided and it wont be yours if it has anything to do with the son or daughter.
In laws are dangerous.

no topic is off limits IF the person you are speaking to understands the simple rule of thumb , Dont ask me a question you DO NOT want me to answer honoestly and dont expect me to NOT ask you a question that you asked me.
Knowingthis before hand helps avoid situationswhere uncomfortable feeling arise and others are hurt or put i na place of embarrassment.I am open to any topic but I hate it wheny people want me ot answer a question but then they refuse ot answer the same question posed to them.I also hate it when lies are told just to spare someones feeling becuase it MAY jus tavoid dealing with an issue.
Sorry if they asked you for your opinion then give it better ot deal with it now then wait for itto BLOW UP and burst in in your face.

Sports with the father-in-law. Mother-in-law, when she was alive loved Alan Jackson, so talked about his music.
Helps to know what they are interested in, then just run with that.
