It is a both/and issue. Jesus told us that we are to make disciples of all nations, and that He has prepared good works in advance for us to do.

Most people don't care what you believe, until they believe that you care.

they do both, we have missionaries in Mexico and twice a year we go down and build, repair, etc, help however we can as a group, for their physical needs. The missionaries stay all year and preach, help out in every way they can. We send money to the mission year round. We do the same thing for a missionary family we support in northwest Canada.

What shows more service to someone than saving their eternal soul from Hell? That being said, I personally know many missionaries that aren't even allowed to make it known that they're Christian... They witness to people by showing them love and compassion.

Then you don't know much about mother theresa.

She was EXACTLY the same as the other.

She deprived needy children and families of services until they accepted christianity.

She just had a better publicist, then some of the others.

Not in the Catholic Church, they're not.

Catholic missions around the world are heavily engaged in service and humanitarian work.

They believe in feeding and clothing people first, and converting them later.

Without increasing the flock, the flock will dwindle to nothing. It is about survival of Christianity. Also, it is the first duty of every Christian to get people saved---if people are not saved, then they go to hell when they die. This is what we believe and there is nothing that you can say or do that will change our minds because this is what God says in the Bible.

Based on the few dozen that I know, they are primarily interesting in serving and showing love to the hurting.
How many do you know personally?

I think they are trying to reach as many people as they can and lead them to God, and they are using services to achieve that.

I believe that their primary goal is always to save the souls for eternity. They know that no matter what else they do someday the people will die and they desire that no one suffer eternity in hell.
