I think it's because nicotine is a stimulant, which if someone is bipolar, they should not use - it could hinder the "even out" action of the medication, and it can possibly trigger a manic episode.

Research shows that smoking is linked to major depression so i am assuming as lithium is a mood stabiliser then you also need to cut out the depressants in your life such as alcohol/smoking.
It is also proven that smoking cannabis can also lead to manic depression.Hope this helps some.
