Cats have excellent memories and hold serious grudges.
Cats don't understand physical punishment. In addition to it being wrong to hit your cat, punishment simply doesn't work and is likely to make your situation worse. Clever though Kitty is about many things, she won't understand that you're punishing her for scratching the couch. She will only compute that sometimes when you catch her she is treated badly. This may make her insecure and stimulate her to scratch more or develop other undesirable behavior problems.
Eventually you will break the trust and security that is the basis for your cat's relationship with you, and you will find it very difficult to catch her for any reason at all.

That question is sorda hard to answer because cats are much different than dogs because they keep comming back no matter what. A dog my husband and I had all I had to do was walk by him and look at him out of the corner of my eye and he would growel and bark. No I don't think that cats hold grudges.

They never hold grudges against their owners because if the owners have mistreated them badly, the cats will go. But as to visitors, then, sometimes yes. They'll run and hide when Aunty arrives if she has done something to upset them before.

Any animal may hold a grudge against people, especially if they're ill treated. They can show this in different ways, ie. through biting, growling (even cats will do this), and lashing out.

Yes cats hold grudges but not for longer that 3 days, because they forget you after three days. Female cats even forget their own kittens if separated from them for over three days.....just thought you would be interested in that, but aren't they so sweet LoL

Definitely. As a student I shared a house with my boyfriend another couple and my beloved cat who was a kitten. Our male friend was not overkeen on cats.
I came in one evening to find him at home alone in the house and my kitten hidden behind and underneath the tv stand and would not come out. He said he did not know why she was there. I eventually managed to coax her out and she seemed fine. However whenever this male was in the house my kitten was on edge.
When I left college I moved out with my boyfriend and my kitten. Several years later this couple came to stay with us in my ground floor flat. As soon as they walked into our flat the man in question started speaking and my cat jumped up looking concerned and jumped out the open window. She would not ome in all weekend until he had gone.
I have no idea whether he did something to her, although I strongly suspect he did, as my cat was the friendliest cat you could ever come across and was not nervous in any way. She did not like him and would not go any where near him.

I believe that they can though im not sure if its been scientifically proven. My brother used to push my cat with his foot out of his way (not hard but to the point) and one day my cat was at the top of the stairs, heard my brother come in and sprinted down the stairs faster than you can say supercat and leaped onto his leg clawing and biting into it, she would not let go for like 2 minutes and that may not seem long but when youve got a cats fangs and claws digging into you in multiple places its long, by the time the cat let go his leg was COVERED in blood. He couldnt even see the cat from where he was standing so she did it for no reason... except mabey revenge! LOL funny but true, can you say Psycho Cat!!! Beware! LOL!
AND SONIA P YOU ARE WRONG, CATS DO LEARN FROM PUNISHMENT ITS A LITTLE SOMETHING CALLED CONDITIONING... SPANK A CAT FOR POOPING OUTSIDE THE LITTERBOX AND GIVE HIM A TREAT FOR POOPING IN IT... BELIEVE ME THEY LEARN... I HAVE OWNED MANY MANY CATS AND STILL DO, WHAT YOU SAY MAKES NO SENSE, YOUR TRYING TO SAY CATS DONT OR CANT LEARN... DONT ANSWER QUESTIONS THAT YOU DONT KNOW THE ANSWER TO TRYING TO PRETEND YOU "KNOW" WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT. RESEARCH YOUR INTELECT ON CATS AND THEIR VARIOUS BEHAVIORS, AND MODIFICATION.

pretty much any animal/pet can, and will hold a grudge against you. i think their reaction depends on the owner's disposition, personally. my pets (especially my horses) will ignore me for the longest-and then forget about it. the good news is that whoever is holding the grudge will eventually come around.
