Because there is too much money to be won. In the times of George Foreman, Joe Frazier, M. Ali, etc. etc., the only match where there was money was the Heavyweight Title fight. And that was for maybe $20,000 to maybe $100,000 per fight: not much to live off of.
Ali made his most in his fight against Holmes which was a mere $5 million.
Frazier, before his fight with Ali at Madison Sq. Gardens still was only getting maybe $50K per fight. In fact, he made less than $200 for his first 10 wins or so.
See? When a fighter doesn't have money, they are desperate to win and therefore will fight harder.
When, in vegas today, millions are being tossed about on unimportant events, it lowers a fighters desire to fight because even if they take a knock out in the 1st Round, they will make enough money to live the rest of their lives on the fight.

You see, you're wrong here. Just because AMERICAN heavyweight boxers have lost their domination in heavyweight division over the last 10 years and won't be regaining it any time soon doesn't mean that this weight class is weak in general. Period from 1996 to 2003 completely belonged to Lennox Lewis, one of the greatest, most talented boxers that ever lived. I suppose that boxing sucked here because none of the American challengers couldn't even come close to him (excluding that Rahman fluke which was corrected right in the next match). Then for the past 3 years Vitali Klitschko was the dominant fighter and now I believe that his brother Wladimir will be taking that position. Granted, there has been a slight crisis present since Lennox retired but right now all four champions are very good fighters and matches between them will be tremendous to watch. There are also several very successful and talented young boxers here in Europe such as Ruslan Chagaev (26), Denis Boytsov (20), Alexander Dimitrenko (23), Egon Roth (26) and so on, that are rapidly making their way through the rankings and will make this division a lot more interesting in very near future.
So no, heavyweight boxing doesn't suck. It has just come under complete domination of European fighters. This fact won't be changing any time soon and that's all there is to it. If that makes it uninteresting for the Americans... well what can I say.

The main reason why the heavyweight division is suffering so much is that in general boxers of today are crybabies overall. The fights that need to happen dont over contract squabbles or people ducking real competition to just get a pay day. Boxing before didnt have that much money in the sport so they fought for pride. Now they fight for money. Throw in Don King and PPV and you had a recipe for Heavyweight disintegration. No real new names stepped up and the same cast of regulars can lose and still get a title fight. I believe now that there are no more American Heavyweights things will change because those guys are just hungry and are finally getting their earned respect.

Our Culture is evolving away from Pugilism. In the early days it was a way to prove your manhood and for alot of minorities, a good way to make a living.
Now men in our country do not have to resort to these acts as a way of life. The reason it was so great 40-50 years ago was because those men were fighting for a better life.
Society has been able to provide alot of these minorities with a way out through other means. Men do not have to resort to fighting to make a living. Eventually another heavyweight will come along who really wants it. Hopefully he will have some challengers as well.
So if I had to blame the decline of boxing on one thing I would say Society's evolution.
Not to mention that Extreme Octogon fighting is where the "real" men fight. The emmergence of cage fighting and martial arts fighting has also increased dramatically over the past 10 years and is going strong. This cannot help the sport of boxing in any way.
I am afraid you are going to have watch re-runs until we get another Rumble in the Jungle

They don't have the caliber they once have like in the early 90's when Holyfield, Lewis, Tyson dominated the field. The good old days of heavyweight boxing is gone.Gone were the glory days of Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Holmes and many others.

I don't know. I used to love boxing but the fighters just got worse. When I watch boxing I want to see boxing not hugging. But, if you think about boxing 10 yrs. ago isn't what it was 10 or 20 yrs. before that. Plus the last time I watched it Roy Jones, Jr. wasn't boxing anymore.

I don't think that the boxers suck, I think the competition is better. The promoters aren't as good as they used to be, they don't "pump up" the knock out artists like they used to and they're always looking for that unblemished record. If you get one loss you look bad, they always want two undefeated boxers fighting which messes one record up. I think the trainers are too quick to shove their fighters into the ring before they're ready too, looking for that big payday. There is just too much greed in the sport and it's too much about the money.

I miss the good old days where the heavywieght champ was the most famous athlete on the planet (Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Muhammed Ali). The excitement leading up to a heavywieght championship fight was so exciting - now, I don't even know who the champ is and, frankly, don't care. Sad.

because just like all the other sports, the athletes are only doing it for the fame. they like the heart that boxers of the past had and since they lack it, so will the next generation.
