Diamond will leave a scratch on any type of stone since it's the hardest kind of stone. Character is likened to a diamond since character makes an impression on everybody and leaves its mark. It's the same as having good manners when people around you are being rude or thoughtless. People notice this and it leaves an impression.

first of all, a diamond's characteristics are usually positive; rare, beautiful, high in demand, low in supply, strong....
yes, it's strength does scratch every stone.... therefore, we need to make sure Our character is a Good thing. whether we will or not scratch is not in discussion; it IS going to scratch. now, if it is in a good way or bad way is the Question. :)
let's hope all of us would like to impart good, positive, healthy things for ourselves and eachother, not a scratch of negativity, sadness, hurt, anger, or disappointment.

well, since diamond is the strongest stone know to human, the quote is talking about it's ability to scratch all other stones, but it doens't get damaged itself. because of this ability diamond is compared to a human character. your personality, character, shoul be something solid, something that would impact others without you changing it. basically, don't adjist your personality to suit others, let them adjust to you.

It means character is strength. It implies that your character will leave it's mark on the world.
It's a lame way of saying it. I wouldn't repeat the quote.
