My friend learned not to do this by taking a deep breath and composing herself before every sentence. This helped her, because it gave her that moment of planning out what she would say next.. without using the word "like."

Also, it helped her that she told the people close to her why she was always stopping to take a breath before speaking. Mostly, we didn't notice, but whenever we did, we just knew that she was composing her thoughts.

She tried the tip jar idea- where you place a quarter, dollar, etc in a jar every time the word is said, but that never worked for her.

Good luck!

You just have to stick with it. I did the same thing to stop saying "fer." As in "this is fer you." (I'm STILL working on like!)

First become aware that you're saying it. That's the first step.

Every time you use it extraneously or inapropriately, stop yourself as soon as you realize, then restate what you're saying without that word.

It'll be a pain to do and painful for those listening to you, but eventually you'll be able to stop yourself before it pops out your mouth!

I used to say like all the time and it used to get on my grandma nerves she says stop saying like this and like that. But once you start saying like like you can't stop. But know I stopped. My word know is "OH"

Exercise the resolve to make only positive or negative statements. Nothing will be "like" something anymore: it either will be or won't be.

Try using:

Synonyms: care to, choose to, desire, elect, fancy, feel disposed, feel like, incline toward, please, prefer, select, want, will, wish

You will definitely have to retrain yourself to break the habit.
