Just wanted to know if anyone knew of any standing abdominal exercises that are effective. Have tried doing sit-ups and crunches and they just don't agree with me, I practically can't lift my self up.

When you stand and lift your knees, that works the abs. Target the obliques by lifting your knee towards the elbow on the same side. It's kinda like a standing oblique crunch. Also, you can do a standing cross crunch. Lift your knee up and the elbow from the opposite side.
