my boyfriend is about to get laid off from his job, he was informed of it yesterday. he has a good job that he liked, and now is obviously worried.
He's the kind of man who doesn't like to get a lot of help (fiscal or otherwise) or pity.. but I know that he's upset.
What would be a good way to support him and let him know that I care during this difficult time?

Note: he also has a few other things going on with him that were already stressing him out, so this is like one more straw on the camels back

Men derive a lot of their self-image from work. Even though it isn't his fault, he has been rejected, in a big way, by his employer. So, he will not be feeling especially good about himself until he can find work.

You can help him by helping with the "non-work" portion of his self-image. Tell that you love him, that he makes you proud, that you are glad he's you're man, and that you desire him.

And, since you'll have fewer schedule conflicts for a while, there will be more opportunities to get together. Say, "I know you need to find work, but in the meantime, we'll have more time together."

Talk to him. Tell him that you want to be there for him and if there is anything you can do to help just ask. If he doesn't want to accept money from you, find ways to help him find money. Help him research how to get unemployment. Help him with his cover letters and resume. Don't push him to do things to make you feel better.

ASK HIM FOR HIS HELP WITH SOME STUFF. SHOW HIM THAT HE IS IMPORTANT AND AND NEEDED BY EXPECTING HIS HELP. SHOW HIM HE IS GOOD AT STUFF. DON'T TALK ABOUT THE LAYOFF, BUT IF YOU DO, SAY IT'S TOO BAD THEY COULDN'T AFFORD HIM AND HAD TO DOWNSIZE. DON'T TRY TO HELP OR SUGGEST STUFF. GUYS DON'T WANT TO BE EMASCULATED. YOUR WELL INTENTIONED SUPPORT CAN BACKFIRE. REMEMBER HIS PERCEPTION DOES NOT EQUAL YOUR INTENT. SEE YOUR ACTIONS THROUGH HIS EYES, AND DON'T CRUSH HIS EGO.
