My mom is turning 50 years old at the end of October. My dad (i don't think) isn't going to plan anything for the big day because he is lazy, doesn't want to do it and the fact that we don't have a lot of money. She has thrown birthday parties for my dad when he was 40 and 50 (i don't remeber what she did). I know my mom will be crushed if a party is not thrown for her. We live in Michigan so that time of year we can't have an outdoor party because it's chilly/cold. I am in my early twenties (old enough to drink), so I can afford a party of some sort but nothing too expensive. I'll try and get my dad, brother and sister on it. I need some ideas of what we should do for her birthday. Please Help

Well, what does she like? Start there. Do things that provoke her to reminisce about times gone by. A scrapbook, slide show, etc. are great ways to do this. Check out the links below for more ideas.

I'm an ace at low cost parties! Here's an idea...throw a potluck/munchie birthday party. Invite her friends, get a cake, and ask everyone to bring one munchie or drink for the party. Most people will be more than willing to help with a 50th birthday celebration. If her friends are drinkers, make it a BYOB bash. At age 50, being with friends mean much more than any presents. So just make it a get together to celebrate! Remember, 50 is still YOUNG!! You can also get some streamers and a few balloons to hang around the house to create a festive air. Enjoy and hope I helped!

Even though you are on a tight budget, you can still throw her a wonderful party.

You can make her a birthday cake. Always fun and very easy to do. Go to websites like, foodnetwork.com, or even get a Martha Stewart magazine or cook book. You can also find appetizers and entrees to make as well.

Pick a theme or something favorite of your mother for the party. You can even have a costume party if you wanted, since her birthday is near the end of October.

Target and Wal-Mart, are extremely affordable for party supplies. Sometimes at party supply or costume stores have sales due to new holidays coming up.

You know your mom better than anyone, so do what you think she would enjoy the most.

A nice surprise party at your house or elsewhere where you invite your mother's closest friends and all of the family on both sides (mother and father). Make it a buffet where you can prepare things ahead of time, and let her friends bring their favorite dish if they offer to help. Decorate with crepe paper streamers and a happy birthday sign for your mom. Have someone responsible for keeping her away from the party until the right moment. Then bring her in and surprise her. Have a book in which all guests write a fond memory of being with your mom, and give that to her as a present. Have a GREAT time!!

Good luck!!

have a "bring-your-own-dish" dinner with the friends and family you invite. that way all you have to buy is a cake and some fun decorations. party decorations don't have to be expensive, especially if you go to a party store. fun tablecloths with matching plates and napkins and a few table center pieces (which you could make and save some money) would be a lot of fun. you could also make it a suprise and that would make it even more memorable! good luck :)

Parties can be expensive, the cake, decorations, alcohol, food, paper goods, ect...it all adds up. I agree with an answer someone else gave... why not surprise her by taking her out for a nice dinner, & buying her a nice gift.

Birthday cake, barbecue, her most close friends. They can bring in some food or drink too. Got any friends who play music? A serenade would be the cherry on top.

If you are thinking of planing a get together--maybe can rent a small hall for about $25 and have everyone bring something to pass around and maybe you could hire someone to do karaoke for a fair price and have a good time....
