Benadryl is typically safe for dogs. The dosing could be the only difficulty. The literature reads 0.5-2mg/kg of body weight and you should always start at the minimum dosage and if you think you need to do a maximun dosage please consult your vet. Also, even in very large or giant breeds you should avoid giving more than 2 pills without the advice of your vet. And dogs under 10lbs you should also check with your vet first.

The pills are typically 25mg and can be broken in half for a 12.5mg dose. That is usually good for dogs between 10 and 30lbs. A 40lb dog should be able to take a whole 25mg tablet and that dose should be good up to 75lbs or more.

Also, make sure the only active ingredient is diphenhydramine HCl, some brands and varieties have other ingredients which may be harmful.

It would be better to find out why he needs it. Itching is a symtom of an underlying problem.

Yes, it's very common. Give a minimal dose though. If your dog is under 25 lbs, you probably should get a professional opinion.

One of my friends gives her Shih Tzu (female) Benadryl often; she says that one of her friends with a Shih Tzu said the vet told her she could.

I wouldn't without consulting your vet first for the dosage.
