in muslim tradition, women at certain age (when their monthly period begins) must wear "hijab" which is the scarf on their head because in Islam a man is not allowed to see any part of stranger women's body except the face and hands. he can see the hair of his sister, daughter, mother, aunt and daughter in law and of course he can see all of his wife's body.
the reason is to respect the body of the woman and not allow all people to see it who may not be good or may not have good intentions.
Also because a man in Islam is not allowed to touch any woman except his wife, men who r not able to marry yet may feel irritated if they see women wearing undecent clothes, and this can be hard for them. So wearing hijab restrict this kind of feeling which may lead unmarried men to make sins.
this is not only in Isalm , if u see the picture of Mariam ( jesus mother) u will see her wearing a scarf too.

assalam -- peace be to u brother.

have u ever seen a image or statue of VIRGIN MOTHER MARYAM-pbuh without her head cover and have u ever taken a keen look at her clothes and the modesty in those clothes.?

first of all, its an individual's choice in islam. i wear a hijab out of my will since i was 9 years old. my parents felt i was young, but still i insisted, but my cousins do not wear a hijab. its their choice. some do wear head scarves. so there is no compulsion in religion. and men can or cannot wear their traditional head covers.

Qur'an 2:256.
Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.

wearing a head scarf or burkha or head cover for men, for that matter is not just to protect and safe gaurd one chastity. it has other reasons too.

1st, when u see a bunch of women wearing burkha or head scarf, or say a bunch of men wearing their caps, then irrespective of whether they are rich or poor , powerful or weak, they will all look the same. thus it helps us keep our arrogance in control. and it makes us modest in behaviour.

2nd, when u try covering urself then it shows the simplicity of a person. it shows how man should be. we came in this world with nothing in our hands and will also die empty hands, we cant carry our assests with us to our graves.. that is why we cover our heads or selves.

and yes a woman's adornment is a richer than the riches of Heaven and earth combined. any Holy book will say this, to safe gaurd ur chastity. i dont think there is any religion or God or Holy book which says that bare urselves to men/women who do not belong to u. or is there any, let me know if there is any religion which says that showing ur skin, adultary or fornication is not a sin?

may the peace and blessings of Allah be on u and may He guide u on the right path. may Allah protect u from Hellfire and may He show mercy on u.

According to traditon, women are supposed to cover themselves. They can dress normally in front of other women, children, their uncles, brothers, father, husband, and sons.

I'm Muslim and I don't believe in any of this...I haven't done extensive research so don't take my word for it, but my small research says that the covering of the hair has to do with tradition and not so much religion. It's just a sort of modesty. Back in the '50's in america, Christian women who went to church on sunday would cover their hair with a scarf, or a small cap, right? It's just a form of modesty, that's all.

every muslim girl is supposed to cover her head n this is stated in the Quran.. so its not that it depends on a "specific community".. it's an order from Allah n every muslim community is supposed to follow this.... but unfortunately many muslims ignore this n donot cover their head!!
the significance behind this is that... HAIR is an important part of the beauty of women... n islam protects women from the evil eyes of the public... so that ppl donot stare at them n give cheap comments!!!
n yeah .. in the Quran it is also stated that they can show this to only their "MAHRAMS" n that is their
1)father
2)brothers
3)husbands
4)father-in-law
5)small boys
6)maternal uncles
7)paternal uncles
8)sons
9)nephews
n ofcourse infront of all women!!

Ya, muslim women are supposd to cover all over their body except their face (I may be a little off), that includes their hair. I think it starts at around 10 - 13. alot of women don't do this, but many do. little girls don't have to do it. I don't know why they do this, but they just do
