Nikon is top of the line in quality & price. Minolta/Konica are good, but went bankrupt earlier this year, Not sure who will take over. Canon is excellent for the money. I have a Rebel and like it, except I don't trust the more electronic models. I think the best 35mm were the Canon AE, the Minolta (I think it was G7; had same AE) Ricoh XR-P, Konics FT-1. I have all of these except the Minolta and they still take excellent pics requireing only an occasional battery replacement. I find the digital and electronics stiffil creativity. I've won several awards with photos from these cameras. As far as 35mm, too many people still use them.

Sometimes you can find old cameras at yard sales or used camera shops. Many of these will be fully manual (except for the light meter if there is one), allowing you to play with a variety of settings. Also, it probably couldn't hurt to try shopping for one online.

There are lots of cameras out there. I recently got a Minolta M-5 and it is very nice.
