The disadvantage is that it doesn't work. According to most studies I've seen, more people have been discharged from the military for being gay since the policy went into effect than were before the policy existed.

The advantage is that it allows the government to ignore the issue.

"Don't Ask Don't Tell" is a work of politics. It's how Clinton tried to keep a campaign promise that the military fought him every step of the way.

It's only advantage is that it is a start towards a guarantee of personal freedom. The military (and everyone else) should judge people by how they do their job and leave the rest alone.

It is the most ridiculous, sexist policy and unfortunately it is the rule of law in the American military.
The only criterion that a soldier should meet are:
a) Can he meet the physical requirements to be put into battle.
b) How well can he shoot.

The policy has no advantages.

Advantages - lets good people who want to serve our country do so, regardless of sexual orientation.

Disadvantages - Implies that "telling" or indeed being a homosexual is bad, which it is not.
