If you like to drink something cold - then I recommend white wine, since red wine should really be drunk at room temperature.
Like you, I am trying to stay away from beer, without any frills. I live in CA - so we get a lot of California wine here. My personal fav is a Robert Mondavi Merlot - which is about $8 - $10 a bottle, but tastes really good. Not too dry and not too fruity.
If you like a white the Monadavi Chardonnay is pretty good too.
You may have to taste a few to see what you like, since some can be very dry and some can be very fruity.
But just cause the wine is inexpensive does not make it bad by any means.

Anything that isn't Ripple or Strawberry Hill....There are some very good wines that are not expensive. Go to a good liquor store and ask for suggestions. German wines are very good. I like the wines from Napa Valley, California. You can't go wrong with any of them. Wine is a good healthy choice. You might want to pick up some of those wine six packs and compare the whites and reds. Most people have a preference of one over the other. I like whites and my husband loves reds. Sampling is the best route to see which type you favor. Some are very dry and some are very sweet. I really don't think anyone can suggest a specific wine for you. You need to try some or plan a great little trip to the Napa area and experience wine tasting. It is a blast and the wineries are awesome.

For a red wine to just drink, start with California Zinfandel. It's usually full-bodied and intense, with lots of fruit.
Try Bogle's Old Vine Zinfandel or Rosenblum's Vintner's Cuvee Zinfandel for starters.
If you're looking for red wine with food, try a Spanish or Italian wine.
As for whites, I prefer California Chardonnay and German Riesling, depending on what I'm eating.
As for swirling, it's not done to determine how the wine is aged, but to make it taste better. It might look pretentious, but it actually helps to aerate the wine, let it breathe in your glass, and move the aromas toward your nose.
The sense of smell is a major part of tasting anything, and wine is no different. All of this is done to make the wine taste better and be more enjoyable. Don't you want your wine to taste as good as possible?

Concha Y Toro Frontera Cabernet-Merlot blend
You can get this in a regular 750ml bottle or a 1.5l bottle. Invest in a little vacuum sealer gadget to suck the air out of the wine and then stash it in the fridge so it'll keep longer. Just let it come up to temp a bit before drinking.
Another option? You ready for this? Waltzing Vine Merlot in a box. Yes... you read me right... in a freakin' box. It's not the same vinyl crap Franzia uses. This is a new mylar type pouch that the Aussies started using and it preserves the wine really really well without imparting any flavor. The Waltzing Vine Merlot comes in a 3liter box for about what you'd pay for 3 bottles of the stuff... so it's like getting the 4th bottle for free. Nice everyday stuff.

Lambrusco is a semi sweet red wine that is tastier than a real dry burgundy wine. Chianti is good with Italian food too. White wines are sometimes chosen for seafood dinners. Beware: Too much wine can give you a good headache because they cause your body to make histamines which clog up your sinuses.

gee....depends on what you like....dry or sweet or something in between? red or white? A dry white would be a chardonnay or sauvignon blanc. Something sweeter and you can go with a reisling or zin. If you like dry red try a merlot or chianti. I think a trip to your local store is in order. And hopefully, they'll be versed enough in the wines to help you. There's only so much I can do here.....contact me, though if you need more assistance! Good Luck and Happy Sipping!

We really enjoy Rosemount Winery. They are an Australian vineyard, and IMHO, make a superb Petite Syrah. Also, their cab/grenache blend is a wine sipping wine. Very inexpensive! Usually less than $10.00 USD per bottle!

I've found that any sort of red wine is the best. It's just so light to the taste.
