I am not super strong or athletic, but I think I may have the mental determination to do it.... I was wondering if any of you have personal experience or first hand accounts you could offer me? I am nervous about this, but think this may be a good option for me to get some kind of perspective on my life. I am thinking of joining the Army Reserves.

Why the Army? You should look into the Air Force then make a decision. Specially if you are not in good shape. Even though there are diffferent physical test standards, you will have a hard time because you have to do better on everything, just to prove you are good enough. Dont listen to the others about getting pregnant. Just be respectful, as in any other job. I have also put people out of the Army for being pregnant but that was their choice, not everybody gets out on pregnancy. If you do decide to join the Army, I will suggest to start going to the gym but even if you dont, they will train you up to Army standards. Its just better if you have a good start. My over all recommendation is Air force, better standards of living. Before joining, make sure you research the job they are trying to get you. It will be diffferent from what you have in mind.Over all the ARMY experience is a good one, if you still decide to join join the AF.As a female NCO In the Army Im telling you everything I wish I knew. You may contact me if you have any more questions.

I would seriously get in good physical condition before joining. I am an Army veteran, be sure you can handle the physical before talking to a recruiter and enlisting. For the first 4 or 5 weeks of basic training all drill sergeants are like robots, they must conform you from being a civilian to a soldier, basically not an easy job. Then you find they are real human beings after that point to graduation. Just be physically capable of handling long enduring runs, minimal amount of pushups and sit ups and you will be fine. Good luck.

The Army is like anything else in life. You will get out of it what you put into it. Male or female it doesn't matter. Honestly the Army is more mental then anything else. You will here a lot of negativety about the Armed Services but that is why we are here so they can voice there opinions freely. But when you join take everything you can out of it. And there is definetly a lot to take out of it.

As a former Drill Sergeant, I can tell you that physically, you can endure anything you put your mind to in the army. Mentally, it can be tougher on you as there are other pressures you would have to endure. Any obstacle can be overcome. The military still has it's standing policy to prevent you from serving in direct combat units, so don't think that you'll get to go to Ranger School or get to wear a green Beret, but there are so many other jobs open to you now.

Go for it, just remember to be a lady, and keep your knees crossed while on a date! I've had to put several women out of the army because they got pregnant either on accident or on purpose.

I was in the marines and it was very good experience for me. They know that women, physically are not the same as men and our training was a little different. By different, I do not mean easier. It is very physical and I have never exercised harder in my life than when I was enlisted in the marine corps. I think you are tested mentally more than anything else. If you didn't know yourself you will definately know who you are after boot camp and your whole military experience. The fact that you have the mental determination to do it, says it all. You can do anything if you believe in yourself and it sounds like you do. Good luck.

A cousin of mine joined the army at age 22, and she's not regretted it a bit. It was tough at first, but she receives excellent training and benefits for life.

I was in the military for 6 years and I noticed women generally have a hard time if they are not very protective of their reputation. For lack of better words, the best advice is to keep your legs closed. Don't worry about physical stuff, they'll train you on that. Just remember: You'll be around a bunch of "deprived" men for a lot of it, and your professional rep will depend upon how you handle yourself in that situation. Women who succeed in the military have high self esteem, strong values, and nerves of steel.

I was in the army, and I will never recommend any one to join the army. If you want school benefits or to serve your country, I would recommend the Air force reserves, In the air force its not as physical, its easier, better food, better training, better barracks, etc... I'd say Go Blue, join the air force reserves or the Air Guard. Stay away from the Army.

I have to say to all of you who are talking about women in the military keeping thier legs closed: It takes two to tango and its too bad that you guys can sit there and talk about us like that. You men are bigger sluts than any female out there so shut the hell up a**holes!!!! And "protect our reputations", everybody has sex. Unless you are talking about someone who is sleeping with everybody, you need to find someone else to pick on.

The Army is bad for EVERYONE. The primary responsibility of an army member is to "protect the country" through violent means. The Armed Forces takes advantage of people by convincing them they don't have other skills, and claims to provide good benefits, but in fact just wants a body to hold a gun and wear body armor.

"What if they declared a war, and nobody showed up?"
