Find a 6 year old who has a bike without training wheels and have that child ride with him. No kid wants to be thought of as being a baby. "Peer pressure" will work in this case. He isn't going to want to ride that bike without the training wheels if he thinks you want him to ride it without the help. Let him think he has come up with the idea to remove the extra wheels. You both will win. Good luck.

My eldest son is a perfectionist and did not want to go without training wheels until he knew he could do it right. He did not do it until he was 6 1/2. We also live on a dirt road, so that makes it harder to ride. We just waited for him - and invited a couple of friends to go riding with him. They encouraged him and once the wheels came off there was no stopping him.

Good luck

I've read all sorts of things about one training wheel and running behind them, but my daughter couldn't do any of these. Then I read an article about taking the training wheels off and putting them on grass and letting themselves push around. Take them to a grassy hill and let them coast down the hill. This helps them learn balance. Let him push himself around the driveway with his feet and coast around. My daughter who had tried for months, learned to ride in 2 days this way. Good Luck.

A scooter is a good way for him to get his balance before trying to get the whole pedaling thing down.

My son was riding a Suzuki JR 50cc dirt bike at 3yr 3mo, but that was his incentive to learn how to ride his bicycle.

HE needs to be ready. You cant just throw him into it and "toss him a little". Thats not fair and you may scare him. Wait till he comes home and says Mommy & Daddy Tommy has no training wheels i want to try. Let him take his time.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!
when he is on the bike push him...not hard, but gently
and if that doesnt work try the "i wont let go" thing.

good luck =]
