you seem like a good candidate for Oahu....the Honolulu area in particular. Waikiki is a great city for partying...people watching....shopping. Waikiki beach, although not one of the "nicest", is probably the most famous Hawaii has to offer and is a "must see". There is public transportation, however, you may want to rent a car to explore the entire island at your own pace. The North Shore of Oahu is amazing and shouldn't be missed. Of course, Pearl Harbor is there and some "touristy" attractions as well. Kailua is a nice town...with a great beach.

Your next best bet would be Maui. Similar to Oahu but not as crowded and not as developed (although its getting close). There isn't much public transportation so I highly recommend renting a car. The "party" scene isn't as predominant....not really many clubs or such. But Front Street in Lahaina has some cool bars and restaurants. There are some great beaches to snorkel.... some great drives (the road to Hana).....Haleakala is great to see at sunrise. You could also take day trips to Molokai and Lanai (other islands which are much smaller) since they are only a ferry ride away and are part of Maui county.

Whatever you decide I'm sure it will be great. Hawaii has so much to offer everyone and each island has its own flavor. Relax.....enjoy and have safe travels.

I live on Oahu, HI. I've been to Maui, Hilo, and Kauai. Oahu is definitely the tourist town and a lot of night life here. Waikiki is where everything is (80% of where the hotels are) A lot of restaurants, nightclubs and shopping. We have I think one of the best public transportation systems here. There are buses everywhere, that Will take you anywhere. I think it's $2.00 one way on the bus and the bus drivers here are friendly. Remember this is an island, you can't get lost. Maybe you could rent a car for a day or two just to go on the other side of island. The north shore is a must to see!!! And Kailua is beautiful too. The other islands are also beautiful but it's more of a laid back, peaceful setting. Totally different atmosphere from Oahu. Where ever you decide to go you won't be disappointed. Have fun!!!

We've been over 20 times and have visited all the Island. It really depends on what you're looking for. Maui has good nite life and adventures...but pretty busy and commercial these days. U'lalena is a wonderful thing to take in there...great tribal event. The big Island offers tons of nite life too but crowded beaches. Ok ...so we love Kauai. Its the most lush and tropical. Not much nite life unless you hit the hotel on the south side....which is as good or better than the other islands. Less people and tons of beautiful secluded beaches and activities...especially kayaking. Have a blast and consider Island hopping...about 60$ or less....that way you can really check it all out. But...Kauai really is the best. :) There you can have privacy when needed or party when you feel like it.Get a rental car wherever you go...thats the only real way to get around. Public trans isn't all that over there. You can get a package deal and that'll help. Have fun.

Oahu, that is where Waikiki is and Honolulu is the airport. You have the some nice beaches on the far side of the island near Bellows and still have night clubs and activities in the evening in Waikiki.

The bus is the easiest way to get around, costs $2 to ride most places ... And you can catch it from the airport to Waikiki Beach.

Maui and Kauai are the best!
Maui is very relaxing and romantic.
Kauai is gorgeous. Visit the many waterfalls on Kauai and take a helicopter ride. Helicopter ride is amazing...expensive but absolutely one of the coolest things you will do in life! Do not pass up the helicopter ride, I mean it you will miss the essence of the island because you will see 800ft. waterfalls that are not accessible by car or foot. Either island you will definitely want to rent a car.

well i just recently went to Honolulu, Hi and we stayed at the Wyatt Regency across the street from Waikiki Beach, u dont need a rental car if u stay there everything is walking distance plus gives u a chance to enjoy the outdoors, now the only thing about oahu is that its a crowed island but more clubs and dining and lots to do then the other islands

I would say a rental car is the best bet.....Kauai is great and the Big Island is wonderful with many different climates. I have never been to Oahu but I think perhaps it or Maui might give you more of a party atmosphere.

Oahu is a great island, I have been there five times. For transportation, last year, we had the TheBus bus pass ($20.00 for a four day Discovery bus pass!! And my hubby rented a car for three days, so we could "island tour" ourselves!!
But by far, Oahu is my #1 choice, and for transportation, buy the Discovery TheBus pass at any ABC store.
