It's a very confrontational defense phrase, and I don't particularly like it either. It's difficult to know the best way to respond to it, and reminds me of something a playground bully might come back with.

i hate that too, but they are right in one way, everytime someone says that I say, if you say this/that you said then YES you're a liar, and then they are suprised because I said this, you should be honest and discuss about it without this stupid sentenses but in some case you have people who are indd of the kind: agree with me or die.....I would say die then if they can't discuss properly....

When someone takes on that attitude, I usually respond "Did I ACTUALLY say that?" If he/she keeps asserting that, then you say "If you keep going in that direction, I might not have a choice but to believe so, as you're getting way too defensive".

I think it's rather funny when people get defensive about things. I am a very easy going person, so I just laugh when other people get worked up.

That is kind of an immature response. It sounds like something a kid would say to another kid if he or she was telling a tall tale.

Are you sure they aren't saying it to be humorous? I sometimes use that line but only in fun when they have me and I know it. Is it worth being angry over - not really.

Yes, it's a very childish response.

I think someone who says this is just looking for a reason to pick a fight.

yeah it's pretty annoying. but i also get annoyed at the opposite, when people always dispute with you, even if you say something completely ordinary.
