I was parked in the resident parking area with a valid parking sticker but an expired dmv registration sticker so they towed my car. I already have a current registration sticker but I forgot to put it on. The apartment management also sent out a letter saying a tow truck will be driving through the community and "all tags must be current." This was very vague and I assumed they only meant my parking sticker.

Can they do this and what if any action can I take?

I live in California.

Yes they can. You have to keep your dmv tags current on the car. It is illegal to park a vehicle with expired tags in a parking lot just like it's illegal to back into a parking spot at apartments. This is made law due to crime common in apartments.

Call this answer tough love.
If you had a current sticker, then why didn't you put it on when you got it? Idiot.

Yes, they can tow your car...it's against the law to park a car with expired tags in any lot, and also if you read your lease I'll bet it's mentioned in there about keeping your tags current as well. Plus, they were trying to help you out, by giving you fair warning that the tow truck was coming.

I'm just curious...when you read that letter saying the tow truck was going to make the rounds, why did you not then put the sticker on your car? You know, the one you supposedly already had but "forgot" to put it on? Why didn't that jog your memory? I think I know...it's because you DIDN'T HAVE IT YET. You might have it now, but it's too late.

There's absolutely nothing you can do, except pay the fine to bail out your car from the impound lot and hope that nothing's been vandalized or stolen from the car while it's been sitting there.

Although I feel kinda bad you got your car towed, you really aren't the injured party here...it's your fault for not putting on the sticker (or forgetting to buy the sticker).

They're within their rights. "All tags must be current" isn't vague at all. The tags are issued by the state and parking stickers are issued by the apartment complex.

If they meant the parking stickers, they would have said, "All parking stickers must be current."

If you failed to put the registration sticker on your car, you blew it. Your action is limited to paying the tow bill and getting your car back -- and put the dang stickers on before you drive it home!!

Under CA law, you may not operate a vehicle on public roads with expired reg stickers so you don't have a leg to stand on.

i would think the only way you could get them to pay for the tow is to say your car was parked in your assigned spot and wasn;t being driven because you haven't got your sticker . otherwise it is like my car in my home drive way getting towed for registration which couldn't happen

but it might be in your lease that if you park there you must have car registered

also they did send out a letter which could be there legal way odf saying we have no liability because we warned you , which makes me think it is in your lease

odds are you are out of luck , but it all depends on lease

The mgr wants to keep "abandonded vehicles" off the property. It was a little jerky to tow a car with last year's sticker but, that's the problem with enforcement - all or none.

I think you'll have to eat this one and put the new sticker on.

it somewhat is what i'm having a situation with.........once you introduced your domestic dog in to stay with you, you had to sign in him on the apartment workplace. you may might desire to instruct information of the essential photos, well being papers, breed of canine, etc. at that factor i visit assume you placed the breed down on paper. i do no longer think of there is every physique interior the international that doesn't understand what a St. Bernard is and how extensive they regulate into as grownup canine. WHY wasn't something suggested to you at that factor? needless to say no one suggested it then. If i'm suitable, what befell? They allowed it for 2 years and basically catching up with you? does not sound stunning to me. Ever had the different court docket situations earlier to now? i'm hoping you freshen up up his poop and save on with all the policies. i think of i might look into this somewhat further. something isn't stunning here. A supervisor basically does not enable this to circulate on for 2 years and then suddenly, bounce on it. Push them and get a rapidly answer. i does not enable them to try this to me the two. i might somewhat have a 197 pound St. Bernard than various little ones i understand..............much less damages to the apartment. EDIT notice: administration can upload or do away with any policies they pick with new human beings, yet they might't try this to somebody already in place. it wish them allowing babies. you have 2 babies and after residing there 2 years, they regulate the policies to pass over little ones. in case you have the canine 2 years in the past, you've got it now. NOW, (God forbid) your canine dies. THEN they might say to you, not extra canine.

I am quite unsure why they would want to do this to their residents if they expect o have any buissness in the future. However, they can do this I just don't think it is a smart move on their part. Are they trying to be the poilce.. seriously.
