Word of mouth is the best advertising, so you want every experience to be a positive one. Make sure that the shop is very clean and decorated in a cute manner. Use good quality coffee, brew it a tiny bit on the strong side, so that it has a lot of flavor. Offer traditional blends and some unusual or house blends. Always offer decaf as well, there are some people who cannot handle "high test." Have hot pots of each choice clearly labeled. Offer hot water for the tea drinkers and offer "regular" and herbal tea bags. You want to build customers, even when they are not coffee drinkers. Keep sweeteners and stirrers and napkins within easy reach. Keep creamer choices close and cold, either in pump servers or on ice for individual servings. If you are offering food items as well, try to remember peoples preferences after they have visited a couple of times. Try to remember peoples names as quickly as possible, todays world can be so impersonal, this can be the only connection this person has had with another human being for hours. Have a container near the cash out area for customers to drop business cards in and have a weekly drawing for free coffee or breakfast or lunch...whatever. Make sure you and your employees treat everyone with respect and keep a smile or your faces at all times....even when it is difficult. Offer one free refill per person. Everything is so expensive now, it will only cost you a few cents, but will go a long way to build good will and a customer for everyday, no matter what the weather. If you make really good homemade soups and sandwiches, do so. Keep your prices competitive, check out other shops in your area to see what the playing field is. Always go the extra step. January Special add a cup of soup to any luncheon for one dollar....February Special one delicious (heart shaped,) cookie free with any meal...March Special cup of thaw you out chili with any sandwich for one dollar. You could also give out a flower to each customer on Valentines Day....doesn't have to be a rose, daisies will do the trick..... Hope this helps and best of luck with your shop. Have a great day!

First, make sure you are serving a quality bean, secondly make sure all your staff has an equal understanding on how to correctly make all the coffee drinks to your standards. Coffee drinkers expect consistency. Also make sure you and your staff make your customers feel at home, let them know you recognize a comeback customer. And that is a pretty good recept for a good coffee house

don't mean to sound sexist, but it's a known fact that advertisers and market research people have spent years proving. get one hot chick to be the head waitress. get her into a low cut top, and as long as she has a sugary disposition, it'll fly. and other things you could do is institute traditions. things that happen at your place that only happen at your place. club cards fer preferred customers, with which they get something, anything free as soon as they are seated. or, you could have a live poetry reading like every wednesday night, open mike.or, have some college music students come in twice a week and play ecclectic, artsy music. or whatever. think big, tho. not money wise-possibility wise. it's catchy, being a limitless person. what really CAN'T one person do if they plan far enough ahead with true realism and perseverence? good luck.

Anne, why are you asking coffee-shop-centered questions? Is it supposed to be an ad for your own coffee shop, of which you are the proud owner, or, are you a privileged customer out there in one of "them" coffee-shops?

It depends on who your clients are. If you're near an office park, then add "lunch-related" items such as sandwiches or salads. If you're in a residential area, offer kid-friendly options, such as a warm (not hot) hot chocolate. Wireless internet, clean atmosphere, and good selection are always a plus.
Depending on your budget and resources you can also try:
1. Daily specials
2. Call ahead orders
3. Band or live music on weekends
4. Fun and comfortable furniture
Good luck!

Have wonderful customer service but don't "force" it. You've gotta be natural when you say things and genuinely mean what you're saying. Smile a bunch!
