Zyprexa is an antipsychotic that works well in treating depression at smaller doses. A similar drug that has the same effect is quetiapine or seroquel this does not cause weight gain or disturb hormone levels. You should not be afraid to take a medication that is prescribed to you by a qualified doctor or psychiatrist as they are trying to help you if you find it doesn't take effect on the symptoms you are suffering from or if you do experience any side effects then go back to gp/psychiatrist and let them know.
Really the main side effect you will find is tiredness as with all antidepressants.

Zyprexa can indeed cause weight gain. It can also cause your cholesterol and blood glucose to increase. Sometimes it can also cause some drowsiness. Other people have experienced some restlessness and trouble sleeping. All that being said, there are plenty of people who do very well on it. I would suggest reviewing everything with your psychiatrist, but you don't have to be afraid to take it. Just because the studies show these effects doesn't mean that every patient will experience every single side effect. There are other medications that work well, so if you try it and you experience side effects that bother you, tell your psychiatrist and he or she can switch you to another medicine. Good luck!

My boyfriend is schizophrenic and has been taking Zyprexa for several years. He likes it. He is high functioning and alert and has never had a relapse or episode while on it. It has some serious side effects though. He does sometimes get prolonged erection (though I'm not complaining..hehe), where his erection can last a long time after orgasm. He also sometimes has epileptic like twitches when he is really stressed out. And he has gained about 15 pounds...but he's still a super hottie! Hope that helped you make a decision. I think you should try it, if it's been prescribed to you. Oh and it does cause drowsiness after he takes it, that's why he takes it before bed.
