He's been wonderful until a few months ago. We've not changed anything in his routine, he just started tearing up the blinds and windows, trying to get out. Please help - we don't want to send him to the pound.

Are you giving him enough exercise and attention? Could this be separation anxiety - that something HAS changed but you haven't noticed?

I have 2 German Shepherds, and Akita and a Beagle. if we don't take them for a run in the morning and a long walk at night, the shepherds will tear the house to pieces, and wake us up in the middle of the night. Just because a dog gets older and seems more docile, doens't mean they don't need the attention and exercise they got as a pup.

You definately should NOT take him to the pound just based on something like that- if your child were to become destructive in such a manner, would you send him or her away?
Perhaps he is bored, a lot of the time dogs just have excess energy they need to let out, especially being he's a golden retriever, a big dog, he has lots of energy- try not just taking him out for walks, but perhaps jogs, or ride a bike while he follows your speed (not TOO fast though!)
If the tearing up doesnt stop after several days of going more exercise, there's two other options:
1)Take him to a dog day care while you're away from home, such as at work, so he can work off his energy with other dogs and supervisors (I'm guessing he's doing this when you're not around, or else you should just be disciplining him.)
2)Hire a professional to help teach you and him how to change his behaviour.

If you love your dog, you'll try everything before possibly thinking of giving him up.

Maybe he sees something that he want to get at really bad. Maybe there is someone out side the house tormenting him when you are at work. I'm not sure when he is doing this, if its when your gone or at home.
In most pounds if it is an older dog and its an owner surrender, they will put the dog to sleep without trying to adopt it out, because it is harder to place an older dog then it is to place a puppy. If you feel that you need to get rid of the dog then call a rescue group, and have them place him. Good luck.

I watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geograph Channel . You should watch it . He's bored. The Whisperer says walk your dog 45 minutes a day A nice long walk does everyone good. If you work and he is alone all day that's the problem.

He's bored! Dogs want to be outside, especially the larger breeds. A Golden Retriever is a hunter's companion. His/her instinct is to be out there running around.
I had the same problem with my beagle.
Trade in your Retriever for a Jack Russell or smaller breed dog if you want a purely inside dog that's not destructive.
Cheers

Ahh, but have you changed any part of your routine? Is he perhaps suffering any seperation anxiety? Do you both work and he is left alone, cause if so, he may be acting out his frustration over you both being gone. Just a guess. Maybe you could consult a Vet and they could help. Good-Luck!

Is there a new somebody living there now or visiting? Sometimes pets can get jealous and do other things they know they're not supposed to in order to get attention...even if it's bad attention. Discipline your dog, don't let him become the alpha male or he'll run your whole house!

He might be bored and not excised enough . My dog would
on ocassions tear something up. But I read in a dog book that
they need enough excise and playtime or they get bored and
full of energy and will take it out on the funiture or pillows.

You may not have changed his routine, but have you changed yours? Possible seperation anxiety. in the fall, i can not leave windows open cause my aussie shepherd will try to go out them as i drive to go to the store. i have come home to find the screen pushed out and hole in it and her paw prints on the outside window sill. my husky has destroyed blinds, but his nails have caught them just right and he likes to look out windows. talk to your vet. it does sound like seperation anxiety.
