Hi there...If a large part of the cat's diet consists of tuna (canned OR fresh)--or if the cat is fed tuna exclusively--some problems are likely to arise.

Tuna does not contain significant amounts of vitamin E, for example, so too much of the fish can lead to vitamin E deficiency, resulting in yellow fat disease, or STEATIS. Any veterinarian can confirm this fact. Symptoms include loss of appetite, fever and hypersensitivity to touch, due to inflammation and necrosis of fat under the skin. Felines who are fed too much tuna can develop other nutrient deficiencies, too, because most de-boned fish are lacking in calcium, sodium, iron, copper and several other vitamins.

Mercury, frequently present in tuna, also presents a potential danger. At low levels, this may not be a concern, but if
tuna is fed nearly exclusively, it could pose significant problems.

The bottom line? I recommend premium commercial food for domestic cat. These foods are formulated to meet all of a cat's dietary needs. Then you can feed an occasional tuna treat for your pet's enjoyment.

Please only allow this as an occasional treat as this could in the long run be medically dangerous. You can again confirm this with any vet.

They make tuna for cats...they have it at trader joes. I would not feed too much human tuna to a cat. It should be fine to let him have some every once in a while, but should be given as more of a treat....not a regular diet.

Persians are finicky cats. All cats love tuna, that is a given, but some domestic cats like it prepared.

tuna is extremely high in protein and if ingested over long periods of time could do some internal damage to a cat. Best advice is a good quality canned cat food....Science Diet is what I serve up to mine. Good Luck!

actually can tuna is very good and very good for you. i think it is amazing how people continue to feed cats human food instead of feeding them cat food even in cans.

fresh tuna is a bit more soury in taste, that is why the cat might not finding so applying.

Moderation is the key.
Use the canned tuna as a reward of sorts.

If your not careful you can cause urinary track infections with foods that contain to much ash, mostly found in canned foods that have fish. I would be careful about feeding any type of table scraps or people food. Cats have a very delicate digestive system and are very prone to infections.
