so that you can let your muscles heal and regrow, it makes you stronger and allows you to gain muscle and get lean. If you did it everyday you would see almost no gain or effect. but by taking time off it allows your body to regrow and repair all the tear's in its muscle.
Ideally you would want to work a different group of muscles. ie monday arms tuesday legs wed rest thursday abs etc etc. so not one part of your body is being overworked.

You do not want to over-train. In addition, the body must have time to absorb and recover from your exercise. If your talking about weight lifting, over-training is the biggest reason why people do not make gains. There are exercises that are good to do everyday, like running, bike ridding, Tae Bo, swimming, but then you would pretty much have to relax the rest of the day. If we over work our muscles, tendons, etc., they will never repair, which means if they do not repair and you use them again, then you will get to gains in strength, endurance, or muscle size.

You don't have to take a day off from just exercising....from weight lifting yes, at least in the same area...Meaning one day you can do your upper body, next day do your lower body. But as for regular ole exercise....30 mins everyday is good for everyone, whether it's walking, or using an eliptical machine, or doing push-ups and sit-ups. The reason needed for every other day lifting is because your muscles need that day to repair themselves. (when you lift weights, your muscles make tears and when they heal is when you notice muscle growth)

Actually your muscles need rest. This way they can grow. If you are in a good shape you don`t have to stop exercising the next day. But you still need a rest, at lest one or two days in the week.

You should at the most exercise every other day. Your muscles need to relax and take time to heal. Every time you lift a weight to a push up, pull up, sit up, or crunch your muscle contracts and expands it causes small tears in the muscle. So giving it a day or two gives it time to heal those microscopic tears. If you don't after time those small tears will become a big one resulting in Strains, sprains and they can become so bad that surgery is the only answer.

Because you risk strecking your muscles, taking them beyond their phisyc capability, like I did, with my abs, now I can't even strech. Don't think that you're superman, the next day you won't feel that good.
