Power, plain and simple. Those that exert the most force garner the most power. The easiest way to garner power is through force and force. The reason they want power is to maintain control and keep their religion on top, if you will. I am not necessarily speaking of total dominance. If a religion is being forced out it forces it's way back and attempts to find recognition by applying force to the predominate religion.
As there is in physics in society all actions are met with an opposite reaction sometimes it is equal sometimes, as with the current US administration more force in the opposite, every, direction.

Because people use religion as a weapon and believe that their way is the only correct way. I happen to be Christian and I love and respect all other religions. Just because I don't agree doesn't mean they aren't right as well. Not to mention it's faith. I can prove the existance of anything I believe, but I believe in it. Why shouldn't others do the same?

Because religions directly or indirectly promote violence. Followers of religions will deny it but it is a fact.

Because Satan has used false religion to do evil things. This turns free-thinking people away from religion and God so that when the true religion comes to find them they turn away from it. It's just one of his many tricks.

People tend to get very passionate about things that involve religion. They also tend to think that God believes the same way they do and hates the same people they hate.

It is the perfect excuse.Anyone can say "God( or insert your deity here) told me to do this!" and no one can disprove it.It's not like God's(or other deity) voice will come down from the Heavens in the middle of a battle and yell "Hey! Knock it off, kids! I did NOT tell you to kill each other!"

because most people have the strongest opinions about their religion. they all think that what they are doing is what their god wants them to do.... thus, they won't budge on their belief. they are stubborn and don't want to hear what the other person believes.
