Your hair will not grow as healthily if you hold onto dead/spilt ends. Your best bet is to trim your ends. You can do microtrim, which basically targets the damaged ends as opposed to cutting more length than necessary. Your hair will still grow, but will probably look alittle scaggly if you don't cut the damaged ends off.
Minimize how often you shampoo. The detergents used to clean the hair can actually strip the hair of its natural/protective oils, which can lead to dryness and cause split ends. To show you how strong the detergents are, look at a bottle of dishwashing liquid. You will most likely find that the first 3 or so ingredients of your shampoo(depending on the brand and concentration) can be found in the ingredients of dishwashing liquid. If you must shampoo often, coat the ends of your hair with conditioner before shampooing and dilute the shampoo abit before applying to the hair. Try focusing on the the roots when you cleanse.
Also, use products that provide moisture to the hair. I recommend using a leave in after washing/conditioning. It helps moisturize and protect the hair from damage.
You should also minimize the use of heat appliances, which zap the hair of moisture, which again causes dryness and increases the likelihood of damage and split ends. And the same goes for brushing. Don't brush hard(if you have tangles, this will only snarl the hair; ripping and causing split ends and damage). If you must brush it(with maybe a paddle brush) do this while you hair is saturated with conditioner. Work your way from the ends the roots; gently detangling/brushing until you remove all tangles.
Also, please know that NO product will mend your hair. Hair is dead. It cannot be repaired. So no amount of product will fix your hair if it is damaged, but alot of products on the market help prevent damage. The key is preventative maintenance.

Trim it! At least one half inch in your case. It's your best bet. Quit frying it with straighteners, curling irons, blow driers, and dyes (unless you are going gray). Get a hair-friendly, end repairing conditioner. Pantine Pro-V has a new conditioner out that repairs split ends. At first I was VERY skeptical, but I used it a few times, and now I don't know how I ever lived without it!
In terms of growing hair, keep it in a pony tail that is tight enough to make your hair grow faster, but isn't so tight that you go bald! Ask a friend or family member to give you a scalp massage (this brings circulation to your scalp and allows your hair to grow faster and healthier!) or give yourself one. I would also recommend buying a massaging shower head to boost circulation without all of the work.
Good luck & Best wishes!!!

Get a trim. It sounds weird, but if you're trying to grow your hair long, getting it trimmed regularly will keep it healthy, and healthy hair can grow faster and longer. Use a deep conditioning treatment and put sunscreen in it when you go outside in the sun (they make special sunscreen spray for hair). Protecting it from the sun will keep it healthy and keep your color bright and shiny. Don't use a ton of hairspray or other styling products, and when you put your hair up, use thick, soft hair ties, so they don't cause breakage. Eat a lot of protein and Vitamin E. I heard somewhere that they help hair grow faster. Good luck!

The only sure solution is to remove the split ends you already have and then invest in a high quality conditioner.
Having regular snips also helps hair to grow......... sounds weird but it is true.
Have a chat with your stylist who should be able to adivse you on the right products for your hair.
Never brush your hair when wet, always use a wide tooth comb and try not to use elastic bands in your hair.

I am growing my hair too and it is almost to my waist. The best thing is to get a little trim every two months. Make sure that you tell your hairdresser that you want a little trim and not a lot. Also, try using a mixture of mayo, eggs and olive oil on your hair once a week.

You have to have the split ends cut, that's why we tell you to get it trimmed every 4-6 weeks.Otherwise,it will break off more than it grows.

The best thing to do is to get at least a half inch cut off. This way you get rid of the dead ends and your hair will continue to grow. It makes it look so much healthier!

Get a trim every 6 to 8 weeks. You'll be amazed at how quickly you see a difference. Also, there is a shampoo by Terax called collagene that will help prevent further damage.
