I have the paste and toothbrush for my Golden retriever, and he likes the flavor of the toothpaste, but he will not allow me to put the toothbrush in his mouth! Does it take 2 people to brush his teeth..1 to hold him still, and the other to brush? How do you successfully do it??

You are going to have to start by not holding him. You have to make it a positive experience. Put some of the toothpaste (canine toothpaste, not people) on your finger and let him lick it. He will probably like it. Don't force him. Make it like a treat. Do that a few times. The next day put the toothpaste on your finger and when he come for it, rub it gently on his teeth. Start on one side on the top. The next time do the other side. The bottoms are the hardest, because they like to clench their teeth. Be patient. After a few days, put toothpaste on the toothbrush and let him lick it. Do the same process you did with your finger.

My dogs LOVE to have their teeth brushed. I have to fight them off while they wait for their turn.

no, it should only take one. Your dog's just not used to it, that's all. All 3 of my greyhounds get their teeth brushed regularly and they're totally fine with it. Make sure you have a very soft toothbrush, brush very gently, and in the beginning until he gets a little more used to it, start by just brushing his front teeth and gradually he'll let you do them all. Have him lying down on his side is probably easiest. If he's being really stubborn about it, you could get a finger toothbrush - you just slip it over your finger, put a little toothpaste on it. Most dogs will accept that readily.

Start off slow...put some toothpaste on your finger & just rub his teeth. Work your way up to the toothbrush. And it is VERY important to brush some dogs teeth. Some breeds are more likely to have bacteria get into their systems from bad teeth.

When I got my dog I realized very quickly that she was not going to let me brush her teeth! I give her lots of hard bones to chew on to help with tartar. She has gotten many compliments on the whiteness of her teeth.

Okay, yes it takes two people, but once he eventually gets used to it, it'll take one. Here's what u do:

one holds him, another brushes, but don't force and brush too hard on his teeth, because his gums'll start bleeding!
Trust me, I had this same problem with my puppy 5 months ago.

Hope this helps! , and good luck!

I use an electric tooth brush for my dog. I figure if I can get it in her mouth it does most of the work for me. It has worked great so far and after weekly cleaning my do has gotten used to it.
