As Carl Sagan pointed out in Demon Haunted World, the alien abduction and anal probing myth is just a re-telling of the medevil succubs/inccubus myth.
And yes, this faith is the same stuff relligion comes from.

I believe a much more plausible theory is that the human brain can be influenced by electromagnetic flucuations at certain locations. These flucuations make people, or at least some people, much more prone to hallucinations, including those that resemble alien abductions and/or religious experiences.

have you noticed that 95% of shows about aliens (on like nat. geographic channel) are on sometime between 9pm-3am?
