Agreed completely. I am a paediatrician and surprised to note this association for 14 yrs of my practise. I tried many times to enquire mothers about this "COINCIDENCE" but even mothers don't know . Not even a single mother has been able draw any relation between jaundice and yellow clothing.
Most common answer from mothers: Just by chance.

I think it has to be
1. a custom
2. a defence mech so that the child looks less yellow than them,.. even when the child is jaundiced,..

of course there can be scientific reason to points 1 and 2 -- children will have some amunt of jaundice normally after birth, some quack can certainly overdiagnose jaundice (thats what quacks do anyway) so over the time experienced mothers may have passed on this knowledge to prevent misdiagnosis
