I am having a hard time writing a best man speech!?

Question

this is the first time i have to give the best man speech!
It has to be around 3 min. I'm not so much into the entertaining speech full of riddles and jokes because I am a bit nervious it will be a dead crowd (and you have to be the type of person that is good on delevering them and i am not).

Anyways for my three min. speech this is what I have so far:

three years ago i met my friend N working in the University cafateria...

He was a hard worker... (So M, he has no excuses when it comes to doing the dishes)

Besides from work, we always had a lot of fun, whether it was playing guitars at the local bar... or just hanging around.

I have heard a lot about m from the first day I met N. No matter what we did, every night that I can remember n made it a priority to call her. You could tell that she was always on his mind.

Out of all the times that I have seen N, the happiest i have ever seen him has always been right before he was going
to visit her.

I will end the speech by saying:

So here's to N and M may thier worst days in their future be better their best days of their past

So please critique... what would you add to make it longer? what would you get rid of?

Oh, once when he was talking with me on the phone he also got hit by a car... should i include that in there? Or is that better kept out

unfortunately i dont know the wife that much...

They had a long distance relationship for a long time

When he got hit with the car,he was fine...

but the best man asked me to speak for around 3 min

Begin with how you met and some fun times you had together and include a funny, but not too raunchy, tale of the groom in his single days before the wife....

Then insert a cute story invovling the three (you, him and new wife) together. You could insert a few nice comments about the new wife.Finish up with well wishes for the future of the couple.

Our bestman was my husbands brother. He was so happy when my husband asked him to be the best man, but when he found out he had to say a speech he froze with terror!!

A few days before the wedding he had nothing yet. So we told him to go online to get a speech example or some ideas. One of my bridesmaid went online with him and they printed up a speech and he did a wonderful job and it was a good one too!

Here it is:

Good Afternoon Ladies, Gentlemen, Boys and Girls.

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is David and for those of you that do ... well I apologise.


Foolishly, M***** has given me the great honour of being best man on this very special day. Let me just say how grateful I was to have been chosen to speak at such a joyous occasion, the wedding of M***** and B*****.


Unfortunately, those feelings have now gone out the window and i stand here before you ... terrified.


Now Before I hand you over to M*****, I would just like to say a big "Thank you" to the bridesmaids because they have done a marvellous job in helping B*****, and look fantastic!!!!

Indeed they are only eclipsed by B***** herself, who, I'm sure you'll agree, looks absolutely stunning today.


M*****, on the other hand, just looks stunned.


At this point i would like to ask both M***** and B***** to take part in my speech. B***** will you please place your left/right hand on the table. M***** will you please place your left/right hand on top of B*****’s.....

Are you enjoying that?

I would like to ask you both to keep your hands in this position until the end of my speech and believe me M***** you will regret it if you don’t.

I would like to also thank you for finally admitting after all this time that I have known you, that I am the best man!

I am sure you will agree that the wedding has turned out to be a fabulous event, but for every silver lining there is a cloud, that is .. that you have to listen to me for a few minutes!

M*****. you are one lucky man! You married B***** today.

She’s a beautiful, smart, funny, loving, and caring young woman.

She really deserves a great husband. Thank god she married you before she found one.

It has been an honour and a privilege to be best man today. Thanks again for letting me have the job!

I think you will all agree that today, M***** truly is the best man and apart from B***** being the most stunning person in the room, she is also the luckiest.


Now, in case any of you are wondering why i asked M***** to place his hand on top of B*****’s, I will tell you now. M***** ... as my final role, it has been with great pleasure that I have been able to give you the last five minutes in which you will ever have the upper hand over B*****.

First leave out car crash.I hate speeches were guys are trying to hurt each other.First nothing about ex girlfriends,wives,guys night out,cheating,infidelity or dancing girls and yes some bestmen do include that stuff.Wish them a happy life together and that you hope you will get to watch this couple grow together for many years to come and they will have a loving and fufilling marriage with all the happiness they both deserve.

You can also say something like "I remember how excited N was when he picked out M's ring and how nervous he was about making sure the proposal was perfect." even put some cute little stuff in there that he did. You can also say something like "When you see them together you can just look at them and tell they are perfect for each other......" then explain what you see.... something like this "the way he smiles when he sees her the first time that day and the way she laughs at all his jokes (even the bad ones)"

I would put all of this in between the first part and the last part. It's sure to be meaningful and will definently make the girls cry!!

Really, I don't have time to read all this prattle. And guess what, neither will anyone at the wedding care to listen to all of this. Why must you speak for 3 minutes? Who deemed this? Sir, youjust get up, raise your glass, and toast the happy couple, making a few SHORT remarks about how you wish them happiness, good fortune, and all the good things in life. You mention how fortunate you think they are to have met one another, you wish them happiness (again), drink from your glass and GET ON WITH IT! You don't need to do something that rivals a Robin Williams stand-up routine. Everyone is interested in partying anyway, and hearing you droan on and on and on trying to be funny, will bore everyone to tears. The best man speech is not expected to be the great oratory of our time. Get it?

Why does it 'have' to be 3 minutes? You should just speak from your heart about your friend. Just don't babble on saying the same stuff over and over again. I went to a wedding and the best man went on for like 10 min. saying the same boring stuff. I was so embarrased for him. Sounds like you have a great start though. Just don't be too long winded.

I like what you have so far. (especially the line about doing the dishes, very clever to work that in). I would just add that you have gotten to know him well over the years, value his friendship, etc. And that even though you don't know her well yet, you value hers too because she makes him so happy, etc. etc. Wish them many years of happiness. Laughter, joy, and good luck always.
