This is going to be a little complicated to explain, but the Father begets the Son eternally. In other words, there is no beginning time or space when this occured. It always was, is, and will be. It is best understood when you do not place the Holy Trinity in the context of time and space. It is in the context of relationship.
I read a disturbing answer to your question from someone else. According to their argument anything of creation is sin, and since Mary is created and gave birth to Jesus, ergo Jesus is sinful. However, this is not true.
The answer hinges on the Genesis account of creation (I am not speaking of this account scientifically or historically, for it would not answer that persons argument). Anyway, the first thing we know of creation that the author(s) of Genesis is greatly emphasizing is that creation is good. God is good and what He creates is out of His goodness. Yet, it was the decision of Adam and Eve (our decision as well) to forsake God and want to be gods of our own. This led to a wound in the universe and a sever in our relationship with God. Since we have sinned so greatly, we cannot hope to restore our relationship with God and much less His creation. And so, God helps us. We have Mary who is sinless and is the new Eve and Christ Jesus who is sinless and is the new Adam. Mary participated in the restoration of the goodness of creation when she accepted the will of God to give birth to Jesus the Word. This is why she is above all mother's because her fiat (her yes) reversed the original decision of Adam and Eve's "no". And so, all creation is restored to God, the covenant with God renewed and all the goodness within that covenant. This was, is, and forever will be ratified in the Body and Blood of Jesus, through His sacrifice on the Cross.
Now could anything sinful ever accomplish such redeeming acts?
May the Lord bless and keep you. May He let the light of His face shine upon you.
God's and your beast of burden

Jesus is the Son of God, the Father... the father -son relationship does imply that the father existed before the son sometime in eternity past. We only know that Jesus was there at the creation of the world..... but before that... we do not know....jesus is the first spiritual son of God... the rest of us were created as physical children, and only became spiritual children through the rebirth experience jesus talked about... by accepting the forgiveness, and atonement jesus did for us.
Jesus is divine as he is the son of the father who is God..... like begets like.....but just like a king is royal and his son the prince is also royal because of who his father is, jesus is divine just as his father god is divine. However the king is still the king, and not the prince.......and God the father is still god, and jesus is the son of God, not god... Jesus made this clear.... I hope this helps.

God didn't beget Jesus. Only Mary knows, and she ain't telling. God is someone who is made up by people who are afraid of things that they don't understand. One day your God will grouped with Zeus, Hercules, Venus and all the other imaginary gods. There are zillions of other gods in whom we no longer believe. What makes this one any different?

My son asked me a question like this when he was about 9 or 10. 'When was God created, and who created God?' And, being the God He is, He gave me this answer - "Just because WE were created, does not mean God was created. We have limited understanding, but God knows everything!" And my son gave me this look of understanding (not!) that reminded me of this verse in the Bible "Faith is the substance of things hoped for; the evidence of things unseen". There is one God, one faith, one baptism, and salvation is through Jesus Christ alone and his redeeming work on the cross for us poor, blind, naked, stoopid sinful creatures! *humbles self* Give thanks to the Father for all He has done. He provides rain and sun to ALL people, and salvation is a free gift. All ya gotta do is receive it, like any other gift. Hope somebody has a happy birthday today. :}
M_Thurson, you are nuts! Where did you learn that? Lemme guess.
Marianne - got your same theological lessons from the same place as Thurson.
The Bible says JESUS IS GOD. Not just the Son of God, but GOD in the flesh. Any other belief is a lie from the PIT.

supposedly (and everyone is going to hate this, I know) Jesus was begotten to Mary by god.
Of course since the creation of life is a sin Mary sinned, and Jesus was "born into sin"
and so he's not perfect.
