Well any one who says WTF I did not have a phone till I was in high school is immature and still should not have one!
I agree, the FIREFLY would be good for starting out cause he really does not need the accessibility of the whole range of services, he just needs to be able to call for emergencies!
They carry them at Target, and I am not sure where else! I am sure that you could find out on the web!
If you would like to know ho many places that carry them you can go to :shopzilla.com
they will give you a list of retailers and a price comparison!
I think it is a great idea for your son and they best idea I have heard in a while! Hope this helps, Good luck and God bless!

Lenz is right it is a great idea. My son is 16 and he has a Tracfone pre-paid and so do I. This way we can keep in touch. I always hated cell phones until I almost got hit by a drunk driver. Then I bought me and my son one.
The Tracfone has a 60 minute card which costs about $20.00. The phone itself, I got the one that was on sale. It's not fancy and it doesn't have a camera or all the other things teenagers want. It does have text messaging and 911 is free. My son knows the rules and he goes by them because I won't buy minutes if they are wasted on talking to friends. The text messaging we use if we know that one or the other has to have the cell phone off.
It will be the best decision you will ever make. There has been so many children missing and alot of perverts out there.

Most cell phone companies have something for kids. Ask your own provider. My sister got her kids something called firefly it allows them to call 10 preset numbers that the parents preset and thats it. NO talking to friends all night, NO calling any number they want, and it limits their talk time each month so there is no overage. I use to work at a cell phone company for 7 years, and these are very popular. Good luck

I would not give him a firefly. Give him a real prepaid and he can learn rsponsiblity by choice. Boys are not phone junkies like girls. Go to your local wal mart or target and go to the electronics department. Talk to the person there in the department for the best suitable one and most popular for people your child's age. I personally have a boost mobile after years of cell phones with plans. I am 23 and the prepaid boost mobile is perfect for me right now. Monitor his minutes about once a week. It is a good way for him to learn responsibility.

I am considering getting a firefly for my 10 yr old to walk to school with and home. I talked to his teacher and she thinks it is a good idea also she will keep it in her desk and give it to him at the end of the day. That way while him and his sister are walking home he can call home if there is a problem or 911.

I believe there is one on the market that is called Firefly. You can preset your number and his step-dad's number in the phone as well as a limited number of others. It's a prepaid phone, so you can also limit talk time. Great for emergencies if you feel he's responsible enough.

nah he's only 11. you should know where he is all the time and you don't need a cell phone to check up on your kid. Just tell you kid to call from his friends house or get him a calling card to use on a payphone. Cell phones can be easily abused and he shouldn't get one until at least 16 when he can get his own job and pay for it himself.

My 12 year old step-son and my 15 year old step-daughter both have phones. I was like "WTF, why does a kid need a cell" at first, but I wound up happy they had it. My son called from a skate park after he had fallen and sprained his wrist bad, and my daughter called while on a walk with her friend (it had started t-storming). I was able to collect them right away. If they hadnt had a cell.....you get my idea.
