How Does A Generator Work

2016-09-29 10:26:28 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

An electrical generator is a device that produces electrical energy from a mechanical energy source using electromagnetic induction. The process is known as electricity generation.

The generator creates an electric current, but does not create electric charge, which is already present in the conductive wire of its windings. It is somewhat analogous to a water pump, which creates a flow of water but does not create the water itself.

Other types of electrical generator exist, based on other electrical phenomena such as piezoelectricity, and magnetohydrodynamics. The construction of a dynamo is similar to that of an electric motor, and all common types of dynamos could work as motors. Also, all common types of electric motors could work as generators.

The generator rotor is turned by a device termed a prime mover, often a Diesel engine, steam turbine, water turbine, wind turbine or gas turbine coupled to the rotor shaft.

When a magnetic field moves past a conductor (like a copper while), it induces a flow of electrons -- an electric current. When the generator burns fuel, it works a bit like a car's motor -- tiny explosions of fuel and air push pistons, which in turn a wheel with a bunch of magnets on it. The moving mangets cause the electrons to flow, and you've got an electric current...

its an engine that runs from petrol and motivates an alternator that charges the battery, the same way that car batterys stay charged (as long as you dont play music non stop for hours on end without leaving your engine running!)
