Originally Muslims were asked to pray or offer Salah 50 times a day. seriously... But then the Muslims asked their Prophet if He could ask God to reduce it. And God agreed and kept it 45. But then the people asked him (The Prophet) again and again till the number came down to 5. And Muslims can pray more than five times if they want to. That is called 'Nawafil'. According to the prophet praying washes away your sins. And also Muslims ask God for his help after their prayer. This is called 'Dua'. So when a muslim is in trouble he asks Allah's (God's) help through 'Dua'. And if they miss a prayer they can offer it later.

Nope. I Muslim and not praying only five times a day.
The five times is called the 'Fardhu`' (obligatory). it is the minimal.
You can do additional prayers, such as Night prayer, Eid prayer, etc.
--What if they have been kidnapped, and need help - can they pray then, or do they have to wait untill they can pray? And what happens if they sleep or miss a prayer?--
The answer is this:
1. You will go to heaven directly if you die shot by the kidnapper because you want to pray. No waiting.
2. It is a sin if they miss it for any the reason.

they dont ONLY pray 5 times a day.5 is just the number of prayers that MUST be done. theyre done at certain times. but, you can always pray whenever you want. think of it this way, you go to church and at church, you pray. you go to church at a set time. but that doesn't mean you can't pray when you get home, right? that was kind of a bad example because the 5 prayers dont have to take place inside a mosque, but hopefully you get the point. the prayers aren't in the middle of the night, so most people don't sleep during them. however if you are at a friends house, etc, you are expected to still pray. if you miss a prayer, it's not the end of the world. just like in christianity, god is forgiving.

You are referring to the five obligatory SALAT prayers, which involve bowing and prostration.
In addition, there is always DUA (supplication) which can be made at any time.
There are, however, a few rules, like don't pray while on or right next to the toilet.
Oversleep? Pray it as soon as you get up. Miss a prayer? Make it as soon as you can, but remember you are held accountable for intentionally missing or unnecessarily delaying any obligatory prayer.
There are special rules of ease, like when traveling, you can combine two of the salat prayer, so essentially you only stop to pray 3 times a day instead of 5.

what do you mean ONLY five times a day? they pray for like ten minutes, and those are just memorized prayers. they can pray whenever they want. it's like saying an 'Our Father' for a catholic...he doesn't HAVE to say the prayer, but he does anyway.

Only? I'm freaking impressed by anyone who can get up early to do those complicated prayers once in the morning, let alone five times a day. Credit where it's due, you've got to give them points for discipline and devotion.

Muslims must pray 5 times in each day. Because Allah wanted it. And we don't pray to get answer from Allah. We pray to give Allah our thanks and show Allah that we didn't forget him. Because we have meals to eat, bed to sleep, a house to live. Allah created everything. Air, meals..And yes, if we need help, we can pray to Allah..We can pray whenever we want.

At *least* five times daily, not "only" five times. There's no prohibition against praying at other times.
