Hostels, backpacking, frequent flyer miles... Staying with families rather than chain hotels. There are many families who love the money and feed you quite well.. Frequent use transport passes (like people get to use the trains and busses for everyday use) If you're going to Asia (especially Japan) you have to purchase these before you get into the country! Remember that or you'll be taking cabs everywhere and paying quite expensive rates for one time rides each way you travel.

hop a frieght - get killed by hobo
ride the dog greyhound - get killed by ex con sitting next to you
airplane - get killed by shoebomber with liquid explosives
