Hostels, backpacking, frequent flyer miles... Staying with families rather than chain hotels. There are many families who love the money and feed you quite well.. Frequent use transport passes (like people get to use the trains and busses for everyday use) If you're going to Asia (especially Japan) you have to purchase these before you get into the country! Remember that or you'll be taking cabs everywhere and paying quite expensive rates for one time rides each way you travel.

Drive-a-way driver-delivering trucks and buses all over the country-you have to have a Commercial driver's license.
Ride with a trucker. Be ready to give it up.
Work for a tour bus company or a rock star.
Be an air waitress.
