Well, Ive lived in florida all my life and neither me or any of my family has ever had oranges next to the toilet. You need to ask the people that are doing this, not just Floridians
No, I'm not a Mexican. I'm a born and bred Florida cracker. Are the people you are talking about perhaps YANKEES that have made their way down south?

It's like northerners having potpourri or candles. The oranges are in abundance, colorful and have a scent that masks all the disgusting stuff husbands do in the bathroom! In fact, I'm stopping at the market on the way home and pick up a bag of naval oranges. Those Floridians may be on to something : )

Both oranges and toilets are common in Florida, but people who put them together are rare.

Because it helps suppress the nasty smell of the excrement in the toilet, as well as the fart gases and otherwise foul-smelling substances. Oranges/limes/lemons/grapefruit are excellent for this.
