Its neither it makes perfect sense. Next chemistry lab your in take a look in the locker with the explosive or flameable notice on it, you'll notice a good number are liquids.

I think it's necessary. There are evil, sick people out there who will look for ways to blow up anything with the most ordinary stuff imaginable. If it keeps me safe, then I'm willing to do without my lotion and bottle of water for the duration of my flight.
