Try David Baladacci for racy, thrilling fiction all his books are great!
Sidney Sheldon for content and good writing ( but the problem is all the books are with women as central characters )
Harry Potter series for magic and wizardry ( it is for Young adults but I have yet to meet a adult who has not read it or better seen it )
Dan Brown is compelling read!
I am of the older generation I love older authors like Irving Wallace, Fredrick Forsyth and Jeffery Archer.

Almost anything by Michael Crichton.
"The Fear of Flying" by Erica Jong. Up until this point sexuality in literature was pablum and the concept of female sexuality was male driven. It's a landmark book. Also an excellent example of a first time author book.
In Sci Fi a lot of things by Harlan Ellison or Phillip Dick
Davinci Code is a current must read, but I don't know if it will endure
Almost anything by James Mitchner, if you can get through it the "Source" was once a major, major book.
Some of Hemmingway's works are still good.
"Breakfast at Tiffany's" was once a landmark book not sure how well it will play today. I'm talking BOOK not movie!
You're looking for good, credible fiction, right.
Almost anything by Joyce Carol Oates
Some of H.G. Welles stuff, like the Time Machine, it's pulp by today's standards but remember it was written in 1900
Jules Verne, 20,000 Leagues under the sea, written in the late 1800s.
A lot of Mark Twain stuff still reads well. Huck Finn
The problem is a lot of "older" books will seem Cliche to you in the 21st century, you have to remember these books are as old as your parents, grandparents or before. Understanding how authors talked way back when, before we accepted things like Gays, Blacks, Sex, etc.
1984 by George Orwell. Then study politics and you'll see he's right!
Brave New World by Huxley, take into consideration he was using cliches from the 1930s and it's a black comedy. Some people I knew actually thought he was being deadly serious! It's farce. It's satire. Yet it's serious. That's why it's a black comedy.
The Most Dangerous Game, that was required reading when I was in school.
It's a short story.
Dickens still has some worth. He's wordy and archaic, but what he said is still important today.
These "good" books talk about mankind, their failings, their obsessions.
We still have all these things!
Alice Through The Looking Glass (or Alice in Wonderland).
I've been told many things on this one, from the fact it's a political alagory to a fantasy caused by doing too much Nitrous.
Remember, many of the best authors are alcholics, drug addicts and in some instances we might call them pervs.
It was said Hemmingway wrote so he could fish and get drunk and when his money ran down he dashed off a book because he knew where to send it to make more money so he could fish and get drunk.
I don't know if that's true or not, it's just a story.
The alternative was stocking shelves at Macy's for 50 cents an hour 5 days a week 8 to 5.

Similar to the Harry Potter books but slightly different are the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman. It's young adult literature, but it's a very engaging read. The three books individually are The Golden Compass, The Amber Spyglass, and The Subtle Knife.
Enjoy!
