Yes, Genesis states that man was created in God's image... male AND female. (Gen 1:27). The Bible also states that mankind and animals at that time only ate plants (Gen 1: 29-30). Some see this as a form of limited evolution or intelligent design. One might ask why THAT'S so controversial.
But, the image part of God is our immortal souls not our physical bodies.
"Mother Nature" is tangible and guaranteed to destroy our plans. God is intangible, the unseen spirit that comforts our souls.
But as far as controversy....
There were pagan gods at the time that "required" too much sacrifice (sometimes human sacrifice). Many of these gods were considered female and may have started the controversy in today's church.
In the New Testament, Christians were warned not to go against the current social taboos of allowing women too much power in the Church (temple). It was to protect the church from unnecessary ridicule. Since women of wealth and property did a lot to support the early church (including Mary Magdalene) it was really a moot point. The controversy today is only among people who don't realize that women can run the show behind the scenes without the credit men seem to crave.
Sorry, that last crack almost sounds like prejudice against men, doesn't it?

There is no book written from Mother nature except well maybe in witchcraft. Adam was created in the image of the Father. Woman came second and was formed from Adam's rib. I also hardly would think that God would refer to himself in the male gender throughout his Word if he were female.

There isn't. God has male and female characteristics. God created Adam male and female. The female part was pulled from him to create Eve.

I think people get really freaked out about any idea that seems different from what they've always been taught. I mean, people like me who think God probably has a wife, are told we're going to hell all the time...sigh...

The Bible never referred to God as a "she". It always says "He", so therefore, God is a "He".
