My roommate and I love animals, but she doesnt' want to get a dog because we live in an apartment on the third floor. My former rommate got a dog and didn't potty train her so our apt. always smelled like pee. My current roommate thinks the same thing will happen in our place, so how can I convince her that it won't? I want a dog soooo bad but I don't want to cause any friction by bringing one home without her consent. Our lease isn't up until next June, so I can't move out right now and frankly I dont want to (too much money). What should I do?

She initially said she wanted a dog. Then when it got serious and I mentioned going to the humane society, she changed her mind. I'm not forcing her, that's the point. I want to convince her, meaning I want to make her WANT the same thing. If I was inconsiderate, I would have just brought the dog home and dared her to say something.
And of course it will be a small dog. I was thinking maybe a toy poodle or a yorkie. Any suggestions for good apt. dogs?

dogs and appartments dont mix, but maybe try a small one? Convince her that because you'll be training it the place will stay clean. Also point out that small dogs are very sweet, try lots of pics.

i think you should get a small puppy, like a little chiuahuah or terrier or something. big dogs + apartments = bad. you should talk to your roomate and tell her that you'll clean up your puppies mess', and that you'll feed it and bring it out for walks. make sure she knows you'll be talking care of the puppy, and she wont have to worry about it.
why dont you make a deal with her... tell her that you'll bring home a puppy for a couple of days/weeks/months (whatever she agrees with). if you can potty train your pup or train it to do other things by then, you can keep her. but if its too much trouble, you can try again next time. but it might be pretty hard to give the puppy up. so thats when you show your roomate how cute it is and how cuddly it is, just to get it on her good side. then she may want to keep her.
whatever you do, just dont get a big dog. they have lots of energy and they're more likely to break a few things in the apt. once every year or every 2 years... Good luck!

Explain to your roommate that you will house-break your dog, and that you have many options of toy ( small) dogs to choose. There is bad new though... toy dogs can be extremely hard to house-train, so don't make a promise that you cannot keep you your roommate!
So, try getting a dog that is at least 25 pounds for easy house training.

Go to the shelter together. She can't help but fall in love with one of the puppies, and take it home. lol.
If you get a puppy that is not house broken then take it to the door that you will use to let him/her outside with, and say the word " outside". Take the puppy outside every 1/2 hour to hour Then let him/her outside and say the words "GO POTTY". Then when he/she goes potty throw him/her a party, get excited, say "GOOD POTTY", "GOOD BOY/GIRL", then give a treat. After you have done this for a few days the pup will learn to go outside.
I have trained all of my dogs in this manner and most of them were trained by the end of the first day. Good luck.

best thing you can do is communicate with your room mate and show your commitment to the proper house training, perhaps leave some books or pamphlets around about crate training and housebreaking. Showing him/her that you are taking their feelings into consideration will help with the process. Also you could find an older dog that is already house broken and that might ease the uneasiness they feel.

don't try to talk someone into getting a dog, you should get a house or a new roommate. you honestly can't tell her that the apt won't smell like pee. you should get over it, at least for a while.

How about adopting an older dog who's already housebroken? That might be a good compromise. However, if she's totally against it don't push her. You can get a dog after you move out if it comes to that!

my advice is to either try to convince her that you'll take full responsibility, or try to get a smaller dog that won't grow that much.
i like dogs to, but mine was trained by me and my family, so it's goes to the door or barks when it want to go outside.
good luck!

Why are you trying to force a dog on someone that doesn't want one?
Does that strike anyone besides me as pretty inconsiderate?
