Not until they are 3 and then it really depends on how your child is doing socially and emotionally. If he or she can follow directions, respects adults, make friends, join in a group, express themselves clearly through words rather than tears, and has A LOT of exposure to other children (several days a week), and groups of children, then they should be fine.
Academic success has nothing to do with readiness. Many parents feel their child should know the curriculum before they start school. It's like learning German before you take a German class. Your child should have some basic skills: hold a pencil in an orthodox way, recognize their name, write their name (upper case first letter followed by lower case), knows 8 basic colors, cuts with scissors, know some numbers and some letter sounds, dress themselves, take care of bathroom needs. Here is a link to some more readiness skills http://www.srvusd.k12.ca.us/schools/REGISTRATION_INFORMATION/KINDERGARTEN/Kindergarten_Readiness_Skills/
If you feel your child is lacking in any of these areas, I do think that a part time preschool is a good idea. Maybe your child can go 2 1/2-3 hours 3 or 4 days a week. Many Montessori schools offer this option. It will give your child a chance to practice some of the readiness skills and give them a jump start in to kindergarten. Good luck!

Not all-day preschool, but a couple of hours a week in a school setting can be great for a little one. Just remember, children make a lot of decisions concerning how they feel about school based on their first experience. If you feel your child might be a trouble-maker (as my girl can be), hold them at home until ready. Make sure they are successful at their first experience. The mindset will stick with them.

I think it is I work in a school. I don't however think they should go everyday or even a full day. Kids need to have the simple knowledge and parents most of the time are to busy to meet some of those requirements. I think is is also great interaction for the kids

NO....it's not necessary....especially if the parents work with their child to teach them letters and numbers and stuff before sending them off to KG. We've done "preschool at home" for all of our kids.
I had my son reading before he entered KG. He's now a 7.5 year old second grader is reading at a 6th grade level.
My middle child just started KG and already knew all her letters, letter sounds and numbers and was starting to put words together.
My 3.5 year old can write her name, knows her letters and numbers and most of the letter sounds. She is as close to reading as her older sister (if not closer!).

Now days, I think it is. They throw alot on our young kids now, very quickly. The kid will start out better and less overwhelmed when they do start kindergarten.
Plus, my kids loved pre-k.
Some are all day, which I think is a little much, but there are some private or church ran pre-k's that only go half a day or a few days a week.

definately! Kids need to learn how to socialise and interact with other children. My twins are nearly 2.5 years old and have been going to kindy once a week for 2 & 3/4 hours. I am amazed at how much they have advanced. They do alot of things like painting and drawing, singing, crafts. I was so suprised when i was laying in bed one day and i heard them singing twinkle little star....i had never sung it to them....

Not necessary at all. I never went and neither did my siblings. I won't be sending my own kids either. All it is is a glorified daycare.
